Question 1

What three things does Paul say “remain,” and how does he present them as a group?

Accepted Answer

Paul names three: faith, hope, and love. He presents them as a unified set by adding “these three,” which signals that the list is meant to be taken together rather than as random virtues. In the flow of 1 Corinthians 13, this grouping functions like a final summary statement: after describing love’s necessity and durability, Paul ends by identifying what continues at the center. The verse itself does not spell out definitions, but it clearly treats the three as a stable core that stands after other things have been weighed.

Question 2

What comparative claim does Paul make within the set of three, and how direct is it?

Accepted Answer

Paul makes a straightforward comparison: “The greatest of these is love.” It is not implied or hinted; it is stated as an explicit ranking within the three. The wording assumes that faith, hope, and love all matter, but that one has a higher status. The verse does not explain the full reason for the ranking, but in the surrounding chapter Paul has emphasized love’s enduring character and its role in giving value to other spiritual activities. The comparison is presented as Paul’s concluding judgment.

Question 3

In this verse, what does “remain” most naturally contrast with in the surrounding context of chapters 12–14?

Accepted Answer

In context, “remain” most naturally contrasts with spiritual gifts and capabilities that can be partial, situational, or temporary in the church’s life—things Paul has been discussing across chapters 12–14. Chapter 13 argues that gifts without love are empty and that some forms of knowing and speaking are limited “now.” Against that background, “remain” signals what lasts as the core of Christian community life. Even without naming gifts here, the verse reads like a closing contrast: some things are impressive but not ultimate; these three continue.

Question 4

How might the word “now” be understood in this sentence, and what difference does it make to the meaning?

Accepted Answer

“Now” can be heard as a simple transition in the argument—something like “as a final point” or “so, in summary.” On that reading, Paul is closing his discussion with a distilled takeaway. “Now” can also be heard as time-focused—“at the present time”—which aligns with earlier statements in the chapter about what is partial in the present. The overall meaning stays similar either way: Paul is highlighting enduring essentials. The main difference is whether the emphasis falls more on concluding the argument or on contrasting present and future.

Question 5

What does the verse itself say (and not say) about why love is “greatest”?

Accepted Answer

The verse clearly says love is “greatest,” but it does not, by itself, specify the criteria—whether “greatest” means most important, most necessary, or most lasting. Those reasons must be inferred from the rest of chapter 13, where love is described as indispensable and enduring. What the verse does say is that love belongs within a triad of what “remains” and that it stands above the other two. What it does not say is that faith or hope are unimportant, or that love replaces them.

Question 6

How does verse 13 function as a conclusion to the chapter’s argument about love?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 functions as a final summary and evaluation. After explaining that love gives value to spiritual activity and that love outlasts partial, temporary expressions, Paul ends with a short list of what remains and then ranks love at the top. This conclusion does two things: it condenses the chapter into memorable terms (faith, hope, love) and it supplies a clear priority (“love is greatest”). As a concluding line inside the wider gifts discussion (chapters 12–14), it points readers away from competing for status and toward enduring qualities.
