Question 1

What two narrative movements happen in Jonah 3:3, and how does the verse signal the shift between them?

Accepted Answer

The verse first reports Jonah’s action: he gets up and goes to Nineveh. It then shifts to a narrator’s comment about the city itself. The shift is signaled by moving from Jonah’s obedience (“according to the word of Yahweh”) to an explanatory aside (“Now Nineveh was…”). That structure matters because it pauses the storyline to orient the reader. The first half highlights Jonah’s compliance with a specific command; the second half prepares for the coming events by emphasizing the scale and importance of the place Jonah is entering.

Question 2

How does the phrase “according to the word of Yahweh” shape the meaning of Jonah’s travel?

Accepted Answer

The phrase ties Jonah’s movement directly to divine instruction. The text is not merely saying Jonah happened to go to Nineveh or decided to go for his own reasons; it presents his travel as obedience to a spoken directive. That explicit link also sets up a contrast with Jonah 1, where he traveled in the opposite direction. In Jonah 3:3, the narrator wants the reader to interpret the journey as a response to Yahweh’s word, not as Jonah’s independent initiative.

Question 3

What is the narrative effect of describing Nineveh as “an exceedingly great city” before Jonah speaks there?

Accepted Answer

The description functions as a framing device: it magnifies the setting so the reader senses the weight of Jonah’s assignment before any sermon content appears. Calling Nineveh “exceedingly great” signals significance—whether in population, influence, or perceived grandeur. It suggests that what happens next will not be a small, local event but something with large scope. This helps explain why the following proclamation and response matter in the plot: Jonah is not addressing a minor village but a major urban center.

Question 4

What are the main plausible meanings of “three days’ journey across,” based on the verse alone?

Accepted Answer

On the face of the wording, it indicates that covering Nineveh required substantial time on foot. One plausible meaning is that it describes the time needed to traverse the city (or its broader urban area) from one side to the other. Another plausible meaning is that it refers to the time needed to move around within it for Jonah’s purpose—covering the city in a way that would reach its people. The verse itself does not specify diameter, perimeter, or itinerary; it communicates scale through a practical, travel-based measure.

Question 5

What information does Jonah 3:3 give about Nineveh, and what key information does it not yet give?

Accepted Answer

It gives location in the narrative (Nineveh is Jonah’s destination), characterization (it is “exceedingly great”), and a scale impression (“three days’ journey across”). It does not yet state anything about the city’s moral condition, political leadership, or how the people will respond. It also does not yet report Jonah’s message; that comes after this background note. The verse is primarily about setting and movement—Jonah’s obedience and Nineveh’s magnitude—rather than the content of the prophetic warning.

Question 6

How does Jonah 3:3 set up expectations for the next verses in Jonah 3?

Accepted Answer

By stressing that Jonah goes in obedience to Yahweh’s word, the verse sets the expectation that Jonah will deliver the message he has been commanded to speak. By stressing that Nineveh is exceptionally large, it sets the expectation that the proclamation will have wide reach and that any response could be significant in scale. The pacing also changes: the narrator slows down to describe the city before narrating Jonah’s preaching. That slowdown signals that the setting is important for interpreting the impact of what follows.
