Question 1

Who speaks in Jonah 4:4, and to whom is the speech directed?

Accepted Answer

In Jonah 4:4, Yahweh is the speaker, and Jonah is the direct addressee. This matters because the verse is not Jonah talking about God, or a narrator commenting on Jonah, but God addressing Jonah personally. The dialogue frame highlights that Jonah’s emotional state is important enough to become the immediate subject of God–prophet interaction. It also shows that the story’s focus shifts from what happened in Nineveh to what is happening inside Jonah—his anger—and how God chooses to engage that anger.

Question 2

What form does God’s response take, and what does that imply about the immediate goal of the response?

Accepted Answer

God’s response takes the form of a question: “Is it right for you to be angry?” The verse does not record a command, an explanation, or a punishment. As a question, it invites evaluation rather than simply announcing a verdict. Even if the question is meant as a rebuke, it still functions by pressing Jonah to face the issue directly and to consider whether his anger fits the situation. The immediate goal is to put Jonah’s emotion under moral review, not to continue the debate Jonah started in 4:1–3 point by point.

Question 3

What is the specific issue God raises, and what does the wording focus attention on?

Accepted Answer

The specific issue is Jonah’s anger. God does not first address Nineveh, the decision to spare the city, or Jonah’s request to die (from the prior verses). Instead, the question focuses on whether Jonah’s anger is “right” or “fitting.” The wording draws attention to the quality and appropriateness of Jonah’s reaction, suggesting that emotions are not treated as morally neutral in this narrative. The verse centers the discussion on Jonah’s stance toward what God has done, not merely Jonah’s feelings as raw data.

Question 4

What possibilities does the word “right” leave open, and how do those possibilities shape the sense of the question?

Accepted Answer

The word translated “right” can be heard as “morally good,” “reasonable,” or “appropriate.” If it means “morally good,” the question sounds like a moral challenge: is Jonah’s anger ethically justified? If it means “reasonable,” the question presses whether Jonah’s anger makes sense given God’s action. If it means “appropriate,” it highlights proportion and fittingness—whether Jonah’s reaction matches the situation. The verse itself does not resolve which shade is primary, so readers infer emphasis from the surrounding story (4:5–11).

Question 5

What does this verse suggest about how God relates to Jonah at this moment?

Accepted Answer

This verse suggests that God engages Jonah relationally and directly. God initiates the response and addresses Jonah without intermediaries. The choice to ask a question rather than immediately correct every argument or impose consequences indicates an approach that exposes Jonah’s inner posture and invites reflection. The verse also suggests God treats Jonah as a responsible moral agent whose emotions and judgments can be examined. Even if the question carries rebuke, it still comes as engagement rather than silence or instant removal of Jonah from the prophetic role.

Question 6

How does Jonah 4:4 function in the flow of Jonah 4:1–11?

Accepted Answer

Jonah 4:4 functions like a pivot. Jonah has just delivered a long complaint (4:1–3), and the story pauses outward action to spotlight Jonah’s internal reaction. God’s question establishes the main issue that the rest of the chapter will develop: whether Jonah’s anger at God’s mercy is justified. Because the verse is brief and unresolved—no answer is given here—it creates tension that the following scene (Jonah outside the city and the object lesson that follows) will explore. It signals that Jonah’s perspective, not Nineveh’s repentance, is now under examination.
