Literary Context
This verse sits in the report of Ish-bosheth’s assassination and the killers’ attempt to gain David’s favor by delivering the victim’s head. Just before, David recalls an earlier moment when someone claimed to have killed Saul to bring “good news,” and David punished him instead (2 Samuel 4:10). Verse 11 is David’s stated reasoning and verdict: the present act is worse, not better. What follows in the narrative (vv. 12) is the execution of that verdict, showing David’s rule will not be built by endorsing private violence.
