About Bible & Context
A context-first Bible study platform designed to help you understand Scripture deeply, clearly, and in its original setting.
Why we exist
The Bible is a library of books written in specific times, places, and cultures. Too often, we read it flat—stripping away the rich color of history, geography, language, and political context that gives the text its full weight.
Bible & Context exists to help restore that depth. We want to make high-quality, seminary-level contextual insight accessible to anyone who wants to study Scripture more deeply—without paywalls, without unnecessary complexity, and without sacrificing clarity.
Our goal is to help readers see the text more clearly by better understanding the world in which it was written.
Our theological posture
We approach this project as Bible-believing Christians. We hold Scripture to be inspired and authoritative. Our goal is not to deconstruct faith, but to deepen it through clarity and honest engagement with the text.
At the same time, our tone is clarity-first, not polemical. We are not here to win arguments or gatekeep. We are here to provide tools that help readers engage Scripture carefully, thoughtfully, and in context.

How we approach the work
Bible & Context is built to be trustworthy, transparent, and useful for real study. That means we aim to write clearly, avoid sensationalism, distinguish context from speculation, and present difficult questions honestly.
Not every interpretive question has universal agreement across all Christian traditions. Where meaningful differences exist, our goal is to handle them fairly and with humility rather than pretending every issue is simpler than it really is.
AI-Assisted Context Lens
Some sections of Bible & Context include what we call a Context Lens—structured insights that highlight historical background, cultural details, literary setting, and thematic connections.
To help scale this work responsibly, we may use AI-assisted tools to help generate early drafts or structured summaries for some Context Lens content.
AI is used as a drafting and research aid—not as the final authority. Context Lens material is reviewed, edited, refined, and published with human judgment.
Sources & Scholarship
Bible & Context draws from historical commentaries, biblical dictionaries, language tools, academic studies, church history resources, and widely recognized Christian scholarship.
Our goal is not to replace formal theological education, but to distill helpful contextual insight into a format that is accessible to everyday readers, teachers, and serious Bible students.
A Note on Interpretation
The material on this site is meant to help readers understand Scripture more clearly through historical, literary, and cultural context.
It is not a replacement for pastoral teaching, church community, or careful study in fellowship with other believers.
We encourage readers to study prayerfully and learn alongside trusted pastors, teachers, and scholars.
Scripture Texts
Bible verses displayed on this site may come from public-domain or licensed Bible translations, depending on the feature and content shown.
All Scripture remains the intellectual property of its respective publishers where applicable, and Bible & Context does not claim ownership of any Bible translation.
Commitment to free content
We believe that financial barriers should never prevent someone from studying God's Word deeply. That's why the core content of Bible & Context—including book guides, Context Lens material, and study tools—will remain free.
Bible & Context is a labor of love. We don't charge for access, run intrusive ads, or sell user data. Your support directly funds:
Transparency & Corrections
We care deeply about accuracy, clarity, and responsible handling of Scripture. If you notice an error, unclear explanation, or something that should be corrected, we welcome respectful feedback.
Please feel free to contact us if something needs correction or clarification. Our goal is to continually refine and improve the quality of the project over time.
About the Creator
Bible & Context is created and maintained by Matt Taves, a software builder and Bible student with a passion for making historical and contextual Bible study more accessible, more structured, and easier to engage online.
The heart behind this project is simple: help people slow down, read Scripture in context, and understand the Bible more clearly.
Support the Project
If Bible & Context has helped you study Scripture more deeply, you can support the ongoing development of the project.
Financial support helps fund hosting, research, writing, and new tools. We also deeply value prayer—that we would have wisdom, integrity, and clarity as we handle God's Word.
