The point is not that nothing can be known about God, but that not everything is given to Israel to possess or manage.

The verse also states a practical purpose: what has been revealed is given “that we may do all the words of this law.” Explicitly, revelation is treated as sufficient for covenant obedience, even if it is not exhaustive knowledge about every divine purpose.

Some differences arise over what “secret” and “revealed” refer to in this setting.

One reading takes “secret things” to mean God’s hidden plans behind events (for example, why future judgment comes in a particular way), while “revealed things” means the covenant instructions already publicly given.

Another reading allows “secret things” to include any information not disclosed in the covenant teaching (including details people might try to gain through forbidden divination), while “revealed” refers to the public teaching Israel is responsible to preserve and practice.

A smaller difference concerns “forever.” Some hear it mainly as permanence of possession (the revelation remains the community’s inheritance), while others hear it as an ongoing responsibility across generations to keep, teach, and enact what was revealed.

Why the disagreement exists

The verse is concise, and it does not list examples of “secret” and “revealed” matters. Readers therefore lean on nearby context (warnings about future unfaithfulness and people asking “why” disaster happened) and on broader biblical themes about God’s hidden purposes versus disclosed instruction. Also, the word “belong” can be heard as “available to know,” “entrusted to guard,” or both.

What this passage clearly contributes

• It explicitly limits human grasp: some realities remain God’s possession and are not handed over to the community.
• It explicitly frames disclosure as communal and multi-generational (“us” and “our children”).
• It explicitly ties what is revealed to action: the disclosure is aimed at doing “all the words of this law,” not satisfying curiosity.
