Unit 1 (v. 10a): The conclusion signal
“Therefore” ties this verse back to the preceding encouragement to enjoy life in its proper season. The instruction is not isolated advice; it is presented as the sensible next step once you accept that life is bright but brief.
Unit 2 (v. 10b): Clear grief from the inner life
“Remove sorrow from your heart” targets what churns inside a person—distressing, vexing, or joy-killing burdens that dominate the mind and emotions. The command frames this kind of grief as something to push out rather than to nurse, because it steals the liveliness youth is meant to have.
Unit 3 (v. 10c): Put away evil from embodied life
“Put away evil from your flesh” moves from inner distress to outward, bodily life. “Flesh” can mean the physical self and daily conduct (flesh). The wording suggests refusing actions or habits that harm oneself or others, especially those driven by impulse.
Unit 4 (v. 10d): The reason—youth fades and proves elusive
The reason is that “youth and the dawn of life are vanity.” The early, bright phase feels substantial, but it passes quickly and cannot be held onto (vanity). Since it is temporary and unpredictable, it should not be squandered on corrosive inner heaviness or damaging behavior.
