Some read “my son” as literal advice to a younger person in a teaching setting; others treat it as a standard wisdom-teacher way of addressing any learner.

Some take “many books” as a broad statement about writings in general; others think it is aimed more narrowly at the flood of additional material that can surround good instruction (the kind of “more and more” that distracts from what has already been said).

Some understand “weariness of the flesh” mainly as straightforward physical fatigue from prolonged study; others hear a broader sense of burnout—mental labor that spills over into the whole person.

Why the disagreement exists

The verse is short and general, and its images (“many books,” “weariness of the flesh”) are not defined further inside the line itself. Its position in the epilogue also leaves room to ask how it relates to the positive description of teaching in 12:9–11 and to the final summary in 12:13–14.

What this passage clearly contributes

This verse adds a closing-note caution: information can expand without limit, but people cannot. It frames study as something that can be good yet still costly, and it warns against assuming that more reading and more research automatically produces proportionate gain. In the book’s ending, it functions as a boundary-marker, preventing the search for wisdom from becoming endless accumulation rather than wise grasp of what has already been given (see Ecclesiastes 12:12).
