Jonah context is set in the kingdom period, where Israel's monarchy from David and Solomon to exile.
Jonah resists God’s command to warn Nineveh, but God relentlessly pursues both the runaway prophet and the threatened city. The story exposes how divine compassion can offend human pride, especially toward enemies.
Fleeing God's Call: Jonah runs from divine commission to Nineveh (Ch. 1:1-16); In the Great Fish: Jonah's prayer and deliverance from the depths (Ch. 1:17-2:10); Preaching to Nineveh: The city repents at prophetic warning (Ch. 3:1-10); Struggling with God's Mercy: Jonah's anger and God's lesson through the plant (Ch. 4:1-11)
Read Jonah as a tightly told story built around repeated scenes and sharp contrasts: prophet vs. sailors, prophet vs. Nineveh, Jonah’s comfort vs. God’s concern. Track what God “appoints” and listen for the questions that expose Jonah’s values.
Jonah is set in relation to the northern kingdom's world and Assyria's power, commonly placed near the era of Jeroboam II. Against that backdrop, the narrative highlights the shock of a foreign city responding to warning while God's own prophet resents mercy.
