Joshua context is set in the exodus and settlement period, where Moses, the exodus, wilderness, covenant instruction, conquest, and judges.
Joshua follows Israel’s move from wilderness to homeland: God leads them across the Jordan, brings key victories, exposes hidden sin, and then orders the land’s distribution so the people can live by God’s word in place.
After Moses’ death, God commissions Joshua and brings Israel across the Jordan; Jericho falls, then defeat at Ai reveals covenant-breaking and is addressed; campaigns in the south and north secure the land; lists of kings and boundary details document the results and set up inheritance for the tribes.
Read it as a transition story: leadership changes, God’s presence is stressed, and major events teach Israel how to live in the land. Notice how narrative episodes and detailed land lists work together to show both conquest and settled life under God’s instruction.
The setting is Canaan as a patchwork of fortified city-states with their own kings, so conflict unfolds as a series of local campaigns rather than one national war. The book reflects a Late Bronze Age world where regional powers and shifting influence shaped how smaller territories resisted or fell.
