Literary Context
Psalm 122 is a “song of ascents,” voiced from the perspective of someone traveling to Jerusalem and celebrating it as the place where Israel gathers for worship and judgment. The psalm moves from joy at arriving (vv. 1–2), to describing Jerusalem’s unity and purpose (vv. 3–5), to urging prayer for its peace and well-being (vv. 6–7). It then narrows to the speaker’s own resolve to speak and act for Jerusalem’s good (vv. 8–9). Verse 9 gives the closing motive by pointing to God’s house as the reason the speaker will keep pursuing the city’s good.
