Literary Context
Psalm 125 belongs to the Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120–134), a set of short pilgrim songs linked with travel to Jerusalem. The psalm as a whole moves from confidence to explanation and then to requests and contrasts. Verse 2 builds on the opening claim that those who trust are steady, shifting from stability (a mountain image) to security (a surrounding image). It uses a simple “as… so…” comparison: what the worshiper can see around Jerusalem helps them picture an unseen reality about Yahweh’s relationship to his people.
