Literary Context
Psalm 125 belongs to the “Songs of Ascents” (Psalms 120–134), a cluster of short pilgrimage-style psalms that often contrast security for faithful worshipers with instability for those who choose crooked paths. Within Psalm 125, the earlier lines emphasize steadiness and protection around Jerusalem and its people (vv. 1–3). Verse 4 then shifts from describing what is true to directly asking God to act in line with that hope. The prayer’s wording also prepares for the contrast that follows in the next verse (v. 5), where those who “turn aside” are treated differently.
