Literary Context
Psalm 127 is a short poem that contrasts anxious human striving with outcomes that depend on Yahweh’s giving. The opening lines (vv. 1–2) say that building, guarding, and relentless work are “in vain” unless Yahweh is involved, and that even daily provision and rest are pictured as something he gives. Verse 3 continues that same outlook by shifting from work and security to the household itself, presenting children as another sphere where receiving outruns controlling. The remaining lines (vv. 4–5) extend the theme by portraying children as strength and support within community life.
