Literary Context
Psalm 149 is a praise song that urges the community to celebrate God with singing and music, then continues with strong language about God’s people sharing in God-given honor and victory. Verse 5 sits in the middle of that movement: after the call to sing a “new song” and rejoice in their king, it focuses on the people’s joyful response as those specially favored. The verse uses parallel lines to reinforce one point from two angles: joy expressed as honored status, and joy expressed as ongoing song even at rest.
