Literary Context
Psalm 20 is framed like a communal prayer for the king as he faces a high-stakes moment, often read as a battle setting. The earlier lines (vv. 1–5) are largely requests and wishes: that Yahweh would answer, protect, remember offerings, and grant victory. Verse 6 marks a turning point from petition to assurance, moving from “may he” language to “now I know” certainty. The rest of the psalm (vv. 7–9) continues that contrast by setting trust in Yahweh against trust in military resources, and it ends with a final plea for the king’s answer.
