Psalm 53 closely parallels Psalm 14 and moves in a clear sequence: it begins with the claim that fools deny God and act corruptly, then describes God’s searching gaze that finds pervasive moral collapse. Verse 4 functions as an indictment that zooms in on a particular expression of that collapse: predatory treatment of “my people.” The verse is framed as a sharp question, building its logic by pairing a shocking image (“eat up my people”) with an everyday comparison (“as they eat bread”) and ending with a relational diagnosis (“don’t call on God”).
