Deuteronomy recounts that Israel sent men to spy out the land, and their report said it was good Deuteronomy 1:22–25. The people then refused to go up, complaining and fearing the inhabitants Deuteronomy 1:26–28. Moses reminded them the LORD would go before them, but they would not listen Deuteronomy 1:29–33.
Moses recalls how Israel left Horeb and traveled through a harsh wilderness to Kadesh-barnea at the edge of Amorite hill country (Deuteronomy 1:19). There he announced that Yahweh had placed the land in front of them and urged them to go up and take it without fear. The people then proposed sending scouts to investigate routes and towns. This passage sits inside Moses’ opening historical review in Deuteronomy, where he retells key moments leading up to Israel’s present position. The retelling is selective and shaped as a speech: Moses summarizes the journey, repeats earlier instructions, and highlights decisions made at critical points.
Deuteronomy 1:19–25 presents Israel’s movement from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea as guided by Yahweh and aimed at entering the “hill-country of the Amorites.” Moses frames arrival at Kadesh as a threshold moment: the land is “set before” them and described as a gift Yahweh “gives” (verses 20–21, 25).
