God reveals himself to Moses as 'I AM WHO I AM' and tells Moses to say that I AM has sent him. Exodus also connects this revelation with the LORD, the covenant God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The name is revealed when Moses asks what he should say to Israel if they ask who sent him. God is not giving Moses a magic formula; he is revealing his own faithful presence. The God who sees Israel's affliction is the same God who remembers his covenant and sends Moses back to Egypt.

13Moses said to God, "Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and tell them, `The God of your fathers has sent me to you;` and they ask me, `What is his name?` What should I tell them?"

15God said moreover to Moses, "You shall tell the children of Israel this, `Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.` This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.
