The Kohathites carried the most holy things, but only after Aaron and his sons covered them. They were warned not to go in to look on the holy things even for a moment, lest they die. See Numbers 4:15 and Numbers 4:17–20.
In Numbers 4:1–16, Yahweh orders Moses and Aaron to count the Kohathite Levites who are fit for active duty, defined as ages thirty to fifty. This unit continues the larger organizing project surrounding Israel’s portable sanctuary and its attendants. Earlier, the Levites were set apart from the other tribes and arranged by clans with assigned responsibilities (cf.
Numbers 4:1–16 presents the tabernacle as Israel’s center of worship while the people travel, and it treats that center as both valuable and dangerous.
A common mistake is to treat this as trivia. Names, places, numbers, and sequence details often carry memory, covenant identity, or narrative movement in the biblical story.

15When Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die.
