The grafting image in Romans 11 teaches that belonging to God's people is received by mercy, not owned by ethnic pride or cultural superiority. Gentile believers are grafted into a story they did not create and must not boast over the branches.
Romans 9-11 wrestles with Israel, the nations, promise, mercy, and unbelief. In Romans 11:17-24, Paul uses an olive tree image to warn Gentile believers against arrogance.
The passage forms humility. It teaches gratitude for grace and reverence for God's ongoing purposes rather than triumphalism.
