10:13Meaning
Saul’s death explained as the result of disloyalty The verse states that Saul died “for his trespass” against Yahweh. Two reasons are named: he did not keep “the word of Yahweh,” and he sought counsel from a person with a familiar spirit (a medium) in order to inquire.
Unit 2 (v. 14a): The key contrast—he did not seek Yahweh
The text restates the failure in contrastive form: Saul “didn’t inquire of Yahweh.” This summarizes the previous charges by focusing on where Saul did and did not go for direction.
Unit 3 (v. 14b): Outcome—Yahweh ends Saul and transfers the kingdom
On the basis of that failure, the verse says “therefore” Yahweh killed Saul. It then adds the second outcome: Yahweh turned the kingdom over to David, identified as the son of Jesse.
