These verses give the narrator’s final explanation for Saul’s death and for the change in kingship. The text explicitly ties Saul’s end to “trespass” against Yahweh: he did not keep Yahweh’s word, he sought guidance through a medium, and he did not inquire of Yahweh. On that basis, the narrator says Yahweh killed Saul and transferred the kingdom to David son of Jesse (1 Chronicles 10:13–10:14).

The passage also works as a hinge in the book. It closes Saul’s story with a verdict and opens the way for Chronicles’ larger focus on David and his house.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

Some readers take “Yahweh killed him” as a direct claim about divine action behind the battlefield events (even if the means were ordinary warfare). Others read it as a summary way of saying that Yahweh judged Saul by withdrawing protection and allowing the defeat to happen. Both readings agree the narrator assigns responsibility to Yahweh at the level of ultimate cause, while the earlier story still includes human and military causes.

Another difference is how specific “the word of Yahweh” is here. Some connect it to a particular earlier command Saul disobeyed (known from Samuel). Others think the Chronicler leaves it general on purpose to portray Saul’s pattern of unfaithfulness rather than one isolated failure.

Why the disagreement exists

The verses are brief and assume prior knowledge. They do not name the specific “word,” they do not explain the mechanics of “Yahweh killed him,” and they do not clarify whether “didn’t inquire” means “never did” or “did not do so rightly/at the critical moment.” Those open ends make room for more than one reasonable synthesis with the larger narrative.

What this passage clearly contributes

Explicitly, the text frames Israel’s leadership change as a moral and spiritual evaluation, not merely a political accident: Saul’s failure is described as disloyalty to Yahweh expressed in ignoring Yahweh’s word and seeking forbidden guidance, and the outcome is depicted as Yahweh ending Saul and handing kingship to David. By stating the transfer (“turned the kingdom to David”), the passage sets David’s rise inside Yahweh’s governance of Israel’s history, not only inside human ambition or military success.
