Abishai’s feat and his rank Abishai is introduced as Joab’s brother and as chief of “the three.” His claim to fame is a battle episode where he raises his spear against three hundred and kills them, gaining a reputation within that elite group. He is described as more honored than “the two” and is made their leader, but the text still draws a boundary: he does not attain to “the first three,” implying a higher inner circle.
Benaiah’s mighty deeds and reputation Benaiah is identified by lineage (son of Jehoiada) and origin (from Kabzeel), and his record is summarized as extraordinary acts. He kills two Moabite warriors associated with “Ariel,” then kills a lion in a pit during snowy conditions. He also defeats a towering Egyptian who carries an impressive spear, disarming him with a staff and killing him with the Egyptian’s own weapon.
