Service before the ark and gatekeeping David leaves Asaph and his “brothers” to serve in front of the ark continually, doing the work required each day. Alongside them, Obed-edom and a larger group of their brothers (sixty-eight) are appointed, with Obed-edom son of Jeduthun and Hosah specifically identified as doorkeepers, responsible for guarding and managing entry.
Priesthood at Gibeon and regular offerings Zadok and the other priests are stationed at the tent of Yahweh at the high place in Gibeon. Their central duty is ongoing burnt offerings on the altar—morning and evening—described as matching what is written in Yahweh’s law, which Yahweh commanded for Israel.
Chosen musicians and instruments for thanksgiving With the priestly group are Heman and Jeduthun and other selected, named persons whose task is to give thanks to Yahweh with the repeated refrain that his steadfast love endures forever. Heman and Jeduthun are associated with loud-sounding instruments (trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments for “the songs of God”), and the sons of Jeduthun are assigned to the gate.
Literary Context
This passage concludes the larger scene of bringing the ark to Jerusalem and organizing celebration and worship around it (earlier in the chapter). Just before this, David has appointed Levites for service, introduced song and thanksgiving, and a psalm-like composition has been given voice (16:8–36). These final verses function like administrative closure: they show how the one-time celebration becomes a stable, daily pattern. The narrative also links David’s worship initiatives with priestly duties and ongoing sacrifices, tying music, gatekeeping, and offerings into one coordinated system.
Historical Context
The setting is David’s reign, after Jerusalem has become his political center and the ark has been brought there. The text presumes Israel’s worship structures include Levites for music and guarding sacred spaces, and priests responsible for altar offerings. It also assumes multiple worship sites operate at once: the ark is placed in Jerusalem, while the tent of Yahweh and the main altar service are located at Gibeon. The Chronicler highlights named families and orderly assignments, reflecting concern for continuity, recognized roles, and publicly accountable worship leadership.
Theological Significance
These verses present David turning a one-time celebration into an organized, ongoing worship routine. The text explicitly shows multiple named roles: musicians serving “before the ark” in Jerusalem, doorkeepers (gatekeepers) managing access, and priests stationed at Gibeon to maintain the altar service (vv. 37–42). Worship is portrayed as both audible thanksgiving (refrain-based praise with instruments) and ordered ritual (scheduled burnt offerings).

Dismissal of the assembly and David’s household blessing The event ends with everyone leaving for their own house. David also returns, but his stated purpose is to bless his house, mirroring the public worship moment with a private, household-facing conclusion.
A second clear feature is “two locations at once”: the ark is in Jerusalem, while “the tent of Yahweh” and the “altar of burnt offering” are at Gibeon (vv. 37, 39–40). The narrator treats both as legitimate parts of Israel’s worship life at this moment.
The passage also ties Israel’s worship schedule to written instruction: the burnt offerings are offered “morning and evening” “according to all that is written in the law of Yahweh” (v. 40). That is an explicit textual claim about continuity with commanded practice, not merely a practical decision.
Finally, the scene closes like a formal dismissal. The public assembly disperses, and David shifts from public leadership to his own household, “to bless his house” (v. 43).
Some interpreters understand the “two-site” arrangement as a temporary, transitional setup until worship is centralized in one place later. Others think the text is presenting a stable, even if unusual, arrangement in David’s time: the ark’s presence in Jerusalem alongside ongoing altar ministry at Gibeon, without signaling a problem.
A smaller difference concerns “continually” (vv. 37, 40). Some take it to mean unbroken, around-the-clock activity. Others read it as regular, dependable service—done daily and on schedule—since the same passage describes “as every day’s work required” and fixed times (“morning and evening”).
The passage itself states the facts (who served, where, and what they did) but does not explain why two centers operate simultaneously or how long this arrangement lasts. Also, English “continually” can suggest either “without stopping” or “consistently, as assigned,” and the context supports either nuance.
It depicts worship as structured and publicly accountable: named leaders, assigned groups, gatekeeping, and instruments are integrated with priestly offerings. It also presents David as coordinating worship roles while grounding altar practice in what is written in Yahweh’s law (v. 40). The conclusion highlights a clean transition from communal worship to ordinary life, with David’s household “blessing” echoing the public ceremony in a private setting (v. 43).
