Literary Context
This unit sits inside Nathan’s message to David after David expresses concern about living in a cedar house while the ark remains in a tent (17:1–2). God’s reply begins by redirecting David from building a temple “house” for God (17:3–6) and then turns to God’s own actions for David and Israel (17:7–10). The logic moves from reminder (what God already did) to promise (what God will do next), setting up the larger promise that follows about David’s line and a lasting dynasty (17:11–14).
Historical Context
The speech assumes the setting of an established kingship under David, after years of movement, conflict, and local threats.
