God’s past protection and future honor for David
God reminds David that his presence has gone with him everywhere. God also says he has removed enemies from David’s path and promises to make David’s reputation great—comparable to the most renowned people on earth.
Unit 3 (vv. 9–10a): A settled place and lasting safety for Israel
God promises to set apart a specific place for Israel and “plant” them so they can live securely without being uprooted. The result is stability: they will not be constantly displaced, and violent, harmful people will not keep wearing them down as happened in earlier periods.
Unit 4 (v. 10b): God’s ongoing victory and the surprise “house” promise
God adds that this protection contrasts with the era beginning when he appointed judges over Israel. He promises to subdue David’s enemies and then delivers the reversal: rather than David building God a house, God says he will build David a “house” (a lasting household or dynasty).
