Kohath’s remaining lines and their heads Verses 18–20 name three Kohathite branches (through Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel) and identify their leading figures. Izhar’s listed line is represented by Shelomith as “the chief.” Hebron’s line is laid out with an ordered sequence—Jeriah as chief, then Amariah, Jahaziel, and Jekameam as second through fourth—showing structured internal leadership. Uzziel’s line follows the same pattern with Micah as chief and Isshiah as second.
Merari’s two main branches and Mahli’s sons Verse 21 shifts from Kohath to Merari, naming Merari’s two sons, Mahli and Mushi, as the main branches. It then narrows to Mahli’s descendants, listing Eleazar and Kish as Mahli’s sons, setting up the later note about what happened when Eleazar left no sons.
Eleazar’s death without sons and an internal-family marriage solution Verse 22 explains that Eleazar died with no sons, only daughters. The text then states that “their brothers the sons of Kish took them to wife,” meaning the daughters married men from Kish’s side of the family. The point is to show how the family line remained tied within the broader kin group despite the lack of male heirs from Eleazar.

In 1 Chronicles 23, David reorganizes Levite service as the temple era approaches, and the chapter contains a careful census-like breakdown of Levite families and their heads. This passage sits near the end of that breakdown, completing the remaining Kohathite branches after earlier attention to Amram’s line and other principal groupings, then turning to Merari. The repeated pattern “sons of…; X the chief; Y the second” signals ordered leadership and recognized sub-branches. The note about Eleazar’s daughters adds a narrative-like clarification inside an otherwise list-heavy section, explaining how a family line continued when male heirs were absent.
Historical Context
Chronicles is commonly read as a Persian-period work that re-presents Israel’s past to shape community life after return from exile. Genealogies and service rosters would help a small province define who belonged where, especially for Levites whose roles depended on recognized descent. Although the passage is set in David’s time, its detailed naming of clan heads and ranks fits a community concerned with stable temple administration and inheritance patterns. The mention of daughters marrying within a close family circle reflects the importance of keeping family identity and holdings within recognized kin networks in ancient Israel’s social world.

Mushi’s sons Verse 23 returns to the other Merarite branch, Mushi, listing his three sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth. It closes this segment with a total (“three”), finishing the immediate Merarite listing begun in v. 21.
This passage finishes a roster of Levite family heads. It is mostly administrative: names, family branches, and leadership order (“chief… second… third… fourth”). The text’s explicit aim is clarity about who belongs to which line within Kohath and Merari (vv. 18–23).
It also preserves a short family-history note: Eleazar (of Mahli’s line) died with daughters only, and those daughters married within the related Kish line (v. 22). The list is not only about ancestry; it explains how a family connection continued when there were no sons.
Two small questions in v. 22 can be read differently.
“Their brothers”: Some read this as literal brothers of the women (which would be hard to reconcile with “Eleazar… had no sons”). Others read “brothers” more broadly as close male relatives within the same clan.
“The sons of Kish”: Some take this as men from Kish’s immediate household (Kish being Mahli’s son in v. 21). Others consider whether “Kish” could point to a larger Kish-related group known elsewhere, with the phrase functioning like a clan label.
The passage uses kinship words that can be broader than strict modern family terms, and it compresses multiple generations into short lines. Also, the surrounding chapter has several repeated personal names, so readers sometimes wonder whether a repeated name is a new person or the same name appearing in another branch.
It reinforces that Levite organization depended on recognized descent and ordered leadership within each branch: Izhar’s line has a chief (v. 18), Hebron’s line has ranked leaders (v. 19), and Uzziel’s line has a chief and second (v. 20). It also shows that the Chronicler sometimes pauses a list to clarify a potential break in the record (Eleazar having only daughters) and then states how the family remained connected through an in-family marriage arrangement (v. 22).
