The verse itself does not explain; it simply names an Ahimelech linked with Ithamar’s line and later calls him “son of Abiathar” (v.6).
Second, what to do with the two titles in v.5 (“princes of the sanctuary” and “princes of God”). Some readers take them as two different kinds of leaders or roles; others take them as two phrases pointing to the same idea—recognized priestly leaders—using two ways of speaking.
The passage assumes the audience knows the priestly families and titles already. It gives names and titles without clarifying whether they match other texts’ uses. Also, v.6’s brief note about houses being “taken” for Eleazar and Ithamar can be read as a technical description of alternation in the lot process, but it is not fully explained.
