The next verse again says “sons of Merari” and then lists names tied to Jaaziah. Some understand Jaaziah as another Merarite branch being inserted; others think the wording shows copying/arrangement complexity where a sub-branch is being restated to ensure no clan is missed.
The passage is highly compressed, repetitive, and list-like. That style is good for preserving names but can be ambiguous about exact family steps. Also, the repeated “sons of Merari” and the reappearance of names (like Mahli) create real questions about whether the list is strictly linear or grouped by households and sub-branches.
Explicitly, it expands the chapter’s organization beyond priests to other Levites, showing that temple life depended on multiple Levite houses and their recognized heads. It highlights order and accountability (chiefs and ranked sons) and preserves continuity even when a line ends (Eleazar having no sons). More broadly, it supports the Chronicler’s larger concern: post-exile Israel’s worship and identity were maintained through carefully recorded family lines and assigned service structures.
