Two issues generate most of the discussion.
First, v. 22 lists five sons of Shemaiah but ends with “six.” Some readers take this to mean one son is missing from the surviving list. Others think the number reflects a different counting method (for example, including Shemaiah himself, or counting a name that dropped out in copying). The text itself does not explain the discrepancy.
Second, in v. 21 the chain “sons of Rephaiah … Arnan … Obadiah … Shecaniah” may represent direct father-to-son steps, or it may compress multiple generations. Some read “sons of” as flexible (“descendants of”), while others prefer to treat it as immediate unless there is a clear reason not to.

Also, v. 22’s number (“six”) does not match the names that remain, so interpreters have to account for that mismatch without extra information.
