Chelub’s line and the men of Recah Chelub, identified as Shuhah’s brother, is linked to a short chain: Chelub → Mehir → Eshton. Eshton then connects to several names (Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah). Tehinnah is further described as “father of Ir-nahash.” The unit closes by grouping these figures as “the men of Recah,” tying the genealogy to a recognizable collective identity.
Kenaz, Othniel, craftsmen, and Caleb’s branch A new branch lists Kenaz’s sons as Othniel and Seraiah, and then Othniel’s sons include Hathath. Next, Meonothai is said to be father of Ophrah, and Seraiah to be father of Joab, who is “father of Ge-harashim,” with the reason given that they were craftsmen. Another shift follows to Caleb son of Jephunneh, whose sons are Iru, Elah, and Naam; then Elah’s sons include Kenaz.

These verses sit inside the long Judah genealogies in 1 Chronicles 4, where the writer arranges names and family branches to map Israel’s social memory. The flow is not a continuous story but a sequence of short family notices: one person becomes “father of” another, then the line branches to list sons, then it circles to another sub-branch. The writer sometimes adds quick explanations (“for they were craftsmen”) or links a line to a place-name group (“these are the men of Recah”), connecting genealogy with community roles and locations.
Historical Context
Chronicles was compiled in the Persian-period setting when returned communities in Judah were rebuilding identity, land claims, and local leadership networks. In that environment, lists of families and their associated towns helped clarify who belonged where and how groups were connected. The mention of craftsmen and place-based groups suggests these were not merely private family records but community-relevant memories about settlements, trades, and recognized subgroups. References to different wives and outside connections reflect the way households could include varied backgrounds while still being remembered within Judah’s wider clan framework.
Theological Significance
These verses continue Judah’s genealogies by naming people in short chains (“X fathered Y”) and then grouping them by recognizable communities: “the men of Recah,” and the craftsmen of Ge-harashim (vv.11–12, 14). The list is not telling a single story; it is mapping social memory—families, settlements, and work roles—important for later community identity.

Hodiah’s wife, Shimon’s sons, and Ishi’s sons The text names “the wife of Hodiah” and identifies her as the sister of Naham, then lists descendants described through place or group identifiers: “father of Keilah the Garmite” and “Eshtemoa the Maacathite.” The final verse names Shimon’s sons (Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-hanan, Tilon) and then Ishi’s sons (Zoheth and Ben-zoheth), closing this small cluster of Judah-related lines.
Several names are tied to places: Ir-nahash, Eshtemoa, Gedor, Soco, Zanoah, Keilah (vv.12, 17–19). The repeated “father of” language (see father) signals that people were remembered as key ancestors or founders connected to these places.
The passage also includes household complexity. Mered is connected to two women described in different ways: “his wife the Jewess” and “Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh” (v.18). Whatever the precise family arrangement, the text presents these children as belonging inside Judah’s recorded lines.
What “father of” means in a genealogy like this. Some read “father of” mostly as literal parent-child. Others think it often means “ancestor of” or “founder/leading figure of” a clan or town, especially when followed by place-names (“father of Eshtemoa,” etc.).
Who “she” is in v.17 and how v.18’s mothers relate. The line “and she bore Miriam…” (v.17) has an unclear “she.” Then v.18 speaks of “his wife the Jewess” bearing certain sons, and concludes, “These are the sons of Bithiah… whom Mered took.” Readers differ on whether:
The text moves quickly between branches and does not always restate subjects (“she,” “his”), so the grammar leaves multiple reasonable links. Also, genealogies can use family language flexibly (households, clans, founders), and several names are also place-names, which blurs whether the writer is pointing to individuals, settlements, or both.
Explicitly, the passage identifies Judah-connected lines and subgroups: the men of Recah (v.12), a craftsman group tied to Ge-harashim (v.14), and several “father of” links that attach families to towns (vv.12, 17–19). By inference, it shows that Judah’s remembered identity included not only bloodlines but also locations and skilled labor, and that family records could include women and non-local connections (v.18) without removing the children from Judah’s wider genealogical memory.
