Verse by Verse
Israel’s sacrificial meals show how eating connects people Paul asks them to look at “Israel according to the flesh,” pointing to visible, everyday practice. Those who eat from sacrifices are described as sharing in what the altar stands for, not merely consuming food.
Idols are “nothing,” yet idol sacrifice links to demons Paul anticipates a misunderstanding: he is not claiming the idol itself is a real god or that the sacrificed item gains special power. Nevertheless, he states that what Gentiles sacrifice is offered to demons and not to God, and he does not want the Corinthians sharing in that association.
Two tables cannot be shared; jealousy language warns of provoking Paul frames the issue as an incompatibility: one cannot drink both the Lord’s cup and the cup of demons, or share both tables. He then sharpens the warning by asking whether they intend to provoke the Lord’s jealousy, and whether they think they are stronger than he is—implying this is a dangerous contest they cannot win.
Literary Context
This unit sits inside Paul’s longer treatment of food connected to idols (1 Corinthians 8–10). After acknowledging that idols have no real status in themselves (10:19 echoes the earlier point in ch. 8), Paul still insists that some actions create harmful participation. Just before this, he used the shared cup and bread to show that communal eating forms a bond (10:16–17). Just after, he will return to practical decisions about meat in marketplaces and at dinners, distinguishing ordinary eating from cultic participation (10:23–11:1).
Historical Context
Corinth was a busy Roman city where temples, civic events, and private associations often included meals honoring a deity. Meat from sacrifices could be eaten in temple dining areas or later sold and served elsewhere. New Jesus-followers included many Gentiles who had long social ties to such meals, and refusing could cost friendships or status. Paul addresses how to live among neighbors while setting boundaries. His argument assumes that meals are not only about food but also about belonging and loyalty within a religious and social world.
Theological Significance
Paul treats shared meals as spiritually meaningful, not just social. In this passage, eating sacrificial food is described as “sharing” with what the altar represents (v.18). He applies that logic to pagan sacrifice: even while insisting an idol is not a real god (v.19), he still says pagan sacrifices are offered to rather than to God (v.20).

Paul’s main point is not about the chemical “status” of the meat but about the relationship a person enters by joining a cultic meal. Because the Lord’s meal expresses loyalty and belonging to the Lord, Paul says it cannot be combined with a meal that expresses loyalty and belonging to demons (vv.21–22). The warning about the Lord’s “jealousy” frames this as a serious covenant-like conflict, not a harmless overlap.
Two main questions create different readings:
How literal “demons” is meant. Some take Paul to mean personal spiritual beings are truly involved in idol worship. Others take “demons” as Paul’s way of naming hostile spiritual powers operating through idolatry, without needing to specify how directly present they are at each ritual.
How far “cup/table of demons” extends. Some read Paul as targeting temple/ritual feasts specifically (the setting where the meal clearly functions as worship). Others extend the warning more broadly to any meal closely tied to idol honoring, even if it happens in a private home or civic venue, because the meal still signals religious allegiance.
Why the disagreement exists Paul both (a) denies idols are “anything” (v.19) and (b) says pagan sacrifice is offered to demons (v.20). Readers differ on how to hold those together. Also, “cup/table” language can point narrowly to formal worship meals, but Corinth’s social life blurred lines between temple dining, club events, and dinners where a deity might be honored.
