Bread, thanks, body, and remembrance Jesus gives thanks, breaks the bread, and interprets it: “This is my body,” described as being for them. He then commands a repeated action: “Do this” as a way of remembering him (1 Corinthians 11:24).

Literary Context
This passage sits inside Paul’s longer correction about how the Corinthians are behaving when they gather for the community meal (11:17–34). He has already said their meetings do harm because wealth and status divisions show up at the table, with some eating and drinking while others go without (11:17–22). In response, Paul retells the core words and actions associated with Jesus’ meal, not as a new topic but as the standard their practice should match. Immediately after this retelling, Paul draws practical implications about self-examination and recognizing the shared meaning of the meal (11:27–32).
Historical Context
Corinth in the mid-first century was a busy Roman city with sharp social layers, where shared meals could easily mirror everyday status patterns. Early Christian gatherings often included eating together in homes, and access to food and timing could differ between those with resources and those without. Paul writes to a mixed group of Jesus-followers shaped by both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds, passing on a tradition about Jesus that was already circulating and used in worship. His retelling assumes the community repeats this practice and that it carries a public meaning when performed together.

“Proclaim the Lord’s death” (v. 26). Some understand the proclamation mainly as what the act itself communicates when done as a community ritual. Others think proclamation also includes spoken explanation alongside the eating and drinking.
The passage reports short, remembered sayings used in a communal meal. Such sayings can carry layered meaning: “is” can function as identification or representation; “received from the Lord” can describe direct instruction or authoritative tradition; and “proclaim” can describe a message conveyed by actions, by words, or by both. Paul does not pause here to clarify those details because his immediate purpose is to restate the core tradition as the standard for their gatherings.
This text anchors the Lord’s Supper in Jesus’ last-night actions and words, and it frames the practice as repeatable (“do this … as often as”). It explicitly links the bread to Jesus’ body “for you,” and the cup to “the new covenant in my blood.” It also explains the meal’s ongoing meaning: each repetition publicly announces Jesus’ death and points forward to his coming.
