Question 1

What does Paul claim about the source and transmission of this tradition in verse 23?

Accepted Answer

Paul presents the Lord’s Supper tradition as something he did not invent. He says he “received” it and then “delivered” it to the Corinthians (v. 23). Explicitly, that means Paul sees himself as passing on an established account with authority behind it, not improvising new words for their gatherings. The text also stresses the Lord as the ultimate reference point (“from the Lord”), though it does not spell out how Paul received it. The focus is on continuity: what the Corinthians practice should match what was handed down.

Question 2

Why does Paul mention “the night” Jesus was betrayed/handed over, and what does that detail do in the paragraph?

Accepted Answer

The reference to “the night” Jesus was betrayed/handed over (v. 23) roots the tradition in a specific historical moment and places the meal in the shadow of Jesus’ impending death. It also strengthens the connection Paul will make in verse 26: the meal “proclaims the Lord’s death.” In this short retelling, the betrayal/handing-over line functions like a timestamp and a framing device. It tells the reader that the words over bread and cup are not generic teaching but last-night words tied to the events leading to the crucifixion.

Question 3

List the actions and words associated with the bread in verses 23–24. What parts are actions and what parts are interpretation?

Accepted Answer

For the bread, the reported actions are: Jesus “took bread,” “gave thanks,” “broke it,” and (in this version) told them to take and eat (vv. 23–24). Then Jesus interprets the action with words: “This is my body,” described as “for you” (v. 24). Finally, there is an instruction for repetition: “Do this in memory of me.” The actions describe what happened at the table; the interpretive words explain what the bread means in relation to Jesus; the repetition instruction signals this is meant to be practiced again, not treated as a one-time event.

Question 4

How does verse 25 parallel verse 24, and what new element appears with the cup?

Accepted Answer

Verse 25 mirrors verse 24 by repeating the pattern: an item is taken, words are spoken to interpret it, and repetition is instructed (“do this … in memory of me”). The new element is the covenant language: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.” That ties the cup not only to Jesus’ death (“my blood”) but also to a defined relationship arrangement (“new covenant”). The verse also notes timing—“after supper”—which distinguishes the cup action as occurring in sequence during the meal rather than simultaneously with the bread.

Question 5

According to verse 26, what is the meaning of eating and drinking ‘as often as’ they do it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 26 states an explicit meaning: each time the community eats the bread and drinks the cup, they “proclaim the Lord’s death.” The text treats the repeated practice as a public announcement of what Jesus’ death means for the group’s identity and worship, even though it does not expand on the details here. The verse also adds a time horizon: this proclamation continues “until he comes.” So the meal looks backward (to Jesus’ death) and forward (to his coming) while being repeated in the present.

Question 6

What repeated phrases or ideas hold verses 23–26 together as a single unit?

Accepted Answer

Several repeated ideas unify the unit. First is the pattern of “received” and “delivered,” emphasizing tradition and continuity (v. 23). Second is the paired structure of bread and cup: both have an interpretive saying and both include “do this … in memory of me” (vv. 24–25). Third is the emphasis on repetition: “do this” and “as often as” connect the original event to ongoing practice (vv. 25–26). Finally, the whole unit is oriented around Jesus: “Lord Jesus,” “my body,” “my blood,” “the Lord’s death,” and “until he comes” keep the focus on him rather than on the meal as mere ceremony.
