Question 1

In verse 26, what kinds of contributions does Paul expect to be present when the church comes together, and what single standard governs them all?

Accepted Answer

Paul pictures a meeting where “each one” may bring different kinds of contributions: a song (“psalm”), teaching, a revealed message, speaking in another language, and interpretation. The variety suggests a participatory gathering rather than one person doing everything. But Paul gives one governing standard that is explicit and controlling: “Let all things be done to build each other up.” That standard is not limited to one gift; it applies to the whole meeting. The list matters because it shows Paul is not opposing contributions as such—he is ordering them toward shared benefit.

Question 2

What limits does Paul place on speaking in another language (vv. 27–28), and what problem are those limits meant to address?

Accepted Answer

Paul limits this kind of speech to “two, or at the most three,” and requires that they speak “in turn,” not over each other. He also requires interpretation: “let one interpret.” If there is no interpreter, the speaker must “keep silence in the assembly” and speak “to himself, and to God,” meaning it becomes private rather than public speech. The stated aim throughout this section is mutual strengthening. These limits address the problem of speech that the gathered church cannot understand and therefore cannot benefit from, as well as the disorder that comes from many speaking at once.

Question 3

According to verse 29, what is supposed to happen after prophets speak, and what does that imply about prophetic messages?

Accepted Answer

Paul says, “Let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.” After a limited number of prophetic messages, there is an evaluation process. This implies prophetic speech is not treated as automatically self-validating for the whole church; it is weighed by others in the gathering. The text does not spell out every criterion for discernment, but it clearly places prophecy in a communal setting where listening includes testing and judgment, not only receiving. That aligns with Paul’s larger concern in the chapter: speech should build up the church and be handled in an orderly way.

Question 4

How do verses 30–31 describe turn-taking when multiple people believe they have received a revelation?

Accepted Answer

Paul imagines a situation where one person is speaking and another “sitting by” receives a revelation. In that case, the first speaker should “keep silence,” meaning stop and yield the floor. Paul then summarizes the goal: “you all can prophesy one by one,” so that everyone may learn and be encouraged. The passage presents turn-taking not as a denial of spiritual activity, but as a way for more people to participate meaningfully. It also assumes that managing speaking order is possible and appropriate in the moment, even when someone believes their message is prompted by God.

Question 5

What does “the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets” (v. 32) contribute to Paul’s argument in this section?

Accepted Answer

Verse 32 gives a principle that supports the preceding instructions about silence and yielding. Paul claims prophetic impulses do not override a prophet’s self-control; the prophet can wait, stop, or let another speak. This matters because without that principle, someone might argue that spiritual prompting forces immediate speech and excuses disorder. Paul rejects that idea by tying spiritual speech to responsibility and restraint. The statement also connects directly to verse 33: since God is not a God of confusion but of peace, prophetic speech should display control and order consistent with God’s character.

Question 6

In verse 33, how does Paul connect God’s character to the practical rules he gives in verses 26–32?

Accepted Answer

Paul grounds his practical instructions in a theological claim: “God is not a God of confusion, but of peace.” The rules about limiting speakers, taking turns, requiring interpretation, and yielding to another revelation are not presented as arbitrary meeting etiquette. They are meant to produce peace rather than disorder in the gathered church, reflecting what God is like. The phrase that follows (“as in all the assemblies of the saints”) reinforces that this peace-and-order principle is not unique to Corinth. Whether it applies to every detail or chiefly to the underlying principle, Paul uses God’s character as the reason the gathering should avoid chaotic speech.
