Yet he credits what he now is to God’s grace, insisting that grace was not “in vain” in his case; he worked hard, but he frames that work as God’s grace working with him. He closes by stressing that whether the messenger is Paul or the others, the preaching is the same, and the Corinthians’ belief came from that common proclamation.
Paul treats the “gospel” as a received-and-handed-on message with a stable core. The Corinthians first accepted it and still “stand” in it (vv. 1–2). Paul then summarizes what he passed on as “first importance”: Christ died “for our sins,” was buried, was raised on the third day, and then was seen by multiple witnesses (vv. 3–8). The resurrection claim is presented not as private spirituality but as a public claim supported by named and group witnesses, including Paul.
Paul also frames his own story as a change from persecutor to apostle, explained by God’s grace and shown in sustained labor (vv. 9–10). He closes by insisting that despite different messengers, the basic proclamation was the same, and that is what the Corinthians originally believed (v. 11).
1) “You are saved… if you hold firmly… unless you believed in vain” (v. 2). Some read Paul as saying continued commitment is the evidence that the original belief was real; “in vain” then means it turns out to have been empty because it did not last. Others read him as warning that they may abandon or distort the message, and if they do, their earlier belief becomes ineffective because they no longer hold to the same gospel.
2) “According to the Scriptures” (vv. 3–4). Some take this as meaning specific predictions were fulfilled in detail. Others understand it more broadly: the death-and-resurrection message fits the shape and themes of Israel’s Scriptures (God’s saving purpose, suffering leading to vindication), even if Paul is not pointing to one single “proof text.”
3) What kind of “appearance” is being claimed (vv. 5–8). Paul presents “he appeared” as the basis for identifying witnesses. Many readers take this as bodily appearances of the risen Jesus, continuous with the claim “he was raised.” Others think Paul could be grouping different kinds of experiences under one heading (group experiences and Paul’s own encounter), while still treating them as real encounters that grounded public testimony.
Why the disagreement exists Paul uses compact, shared phrases rather than extended explanation. His wording leaves open questions about how to map “hold firmly” to longer debates about authenticity and endurance, what exactly “according to the Scriptures” points to, and how to relate Paul’s later experience to earlier appearances. The passage is clear about the sequence and the function of the witness list, but it does not answer every follow-up question modern readers bring.
