How to regard Christian leaders Paul instructs people to āthink of usā in a particular way: as Christās servants and as stewards entrusted with Godās mysteries. The point is not that leaders create the message, but that they serve under Christ and manage what belongs to God.
The key expectation for stewards From the steward image Paul draws a simple requirement: the steward must be found faithful. The measure is reliability and trustworthiness in handling what was entrusted, rather than impressiveness or popularity.
Human verdicts and self-verdicts are limited Paul says it matters very little to him if the Corinthians judge him, or if any human court does. He even refuses to make his own self-evaluation the final word. He can say he is not aware of a charge against himself, but he also admits that this does not settle the case; the Lord is the one who judges him.
Literary Context
This section continues Paulās effort to cool down the Corinthian habit of ranking leaders and forming camps around them. After contrasting human status-seeking with Godās upside-down way of working, he reframes what leaders are for: not celebrities to measure, but entrusted workers. The logic moves from identity (servants and stewards) to the main criterion (faithfulness), then to a warning about premature verdicts. Paul also models the stance he wants the church to take: avoid overconfidence, avoid harsh condemnation, and leave the final reckoning to the Lordās timing.
Historical Context
Corinth was a busy Roman city where public reputation, patronage, and competition for honor shaped social life. In that setting, speakers and teachers were often assessed by style, results, and status, and followers could treat them like teams to support. Paul writes as a founding figure who is being evaluated by the community he helped start, while other Christian workers are also in view. His language about āstewardsā fits household and estate management: a trusted manager handled anotherās property and could be praised or removed based on performance.
Theological Significance
Paul reframes how the Corinthians should think about him and other Christian leaders: they are and who manage something that belongs to God (v.1). The core expectation for a steward is not charm, status, or visible success, but being āfound faithfulā (v.2).
