Question 1

In verse 1, what two images does Paul use to describe Christian leaders, and what do those images imply?

Accepted Answer

Paul says leaders should be regarded as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries (v.1). “Servant” emphasizes being under someone else’s authority: Christ sets the agenda. “Steward” emphasizes entrusted responsibility: a steward manages what belongs to another, not what he owns. Together, the images imply that leaders are not the source of the message or the center of the community’s identity. Their role is defined by service and trust, not by personal status or the ability to attract a following.

Question 2

According to verse 2, what is the main requirement for a steward, and what does that suggest about how Paul weighs reputation?

Accepted Answer

The stated requirement is that stewards “be found faithful” (v.2). The focus is on reliability—handling what was entrusted in a way that proves trustworthy. That suggests Paul’s main yardstick is not popularity, rhetorical skill, or outward measurements that a status-driven culture might prize. In the context of Corinth’s leader-ranking, Paul is redirecting attention from surface-level comparisons to the deeper question of whether a leader is dependable in serving Christ and in managing God’s message responsibly.

Question 3

In verses 3–4, what kinds of judgment does Paul downplay, and what limits does he place even on self-evaluation?

Accepted Answer

Paul says it is a “very small thing” to be judged by the Corinthians or by any human tribunal (v.3). He also says he does not even judge himself as the decisive authority. In v.4 he notes he is not aware of any charge against himself, but he immediately adds that this does not settle the case. A clear conscience is significant, but it is not the same as a final verdict. The passage sets a boundary: human assessments, including self-assessments, don’t have ultimate authority.

Question 4

What does Paul mean when he says he is “not justified” by his lack of awareness in verse 4?

Accepted Answer

Paul’s point is that not knowing of any wrongdoing does not automatically amount to being cleared in the highest sense (v.4). His conscience does not accuse him, but that is not equivalent to the final determination of rightness. The text places the decisive judgment with “the Lord,” not with Paul’s internal assessment. Paul is not claiming uncertainty about everything he has done; he is insisting that ultimate evaluation rests with the one who can see completely and judge rightly.

Question 5

How does verse 5 explain why judgment ‘before the time’ is unreliable?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 ties timing to knowledge. Before “the Lord comes,” many realities remain hidden: “the hidden things of darkness” and “the counsels of the hearts” (v.5). Premature judgment is unreliable because it assumes access to what is not yet fully revealed—especially motives and inner intentions. Paul’s logic is that the Lord’s coming brings a kind of disclosure that human observers cannot produce on their own. That future unveiling is the basis for why final verdicts should not be issued early.

Question 6

What is the relationship in this passage between public evaluation and God’s final assessment?

Accepted Answer

Public evaluation exists—Paul acknowledges that the Corinthians and human courts do evaluate (v.3). But he relativizes it: those verdicts are not ultimate, and they are not the proper basis for concluding what God thinks of a person’s work. God’s assessment is presented as final and better informed because it will include what humans cannot fully see (v.5). The passage does not deny that people can notice conduct and teaching; it denies that human evaluation can deliver the final, motive-revealing judgment that belongs to the Lord.

Question 7

In verse 5, what does “each will receive praise from God” contribute to Paul’s argument?

Accepted Answer

The statement supports Paul’s claim that God’s judgment will be both individual (“each”) and accurate, because it follows the revealing of hidden matters and motives (v.5). It reinforces that the decisive recognition comes from God rather than from competing groups within the church. The verse does not require the idea that everyone receives the same evaluation; it simply states that whatever commendation is given will be grounded in what God brings to light at that time. The emphasis is on God’s rightful role as judge and evaluator.
