Question 1

In v.14, what two purposes does Paul contrast, and how does he describe the Corinthians?

Accepted Answer

Paul contrasts writing “to shame” them with writing “to admonish” them. The contrast suggests two different aims: one is public humiliation or making them feel disgraced; the other is corrective warning meant to steer them back. He also names them “my beloved children,” which frames the tone as familial rather than competitive. Even if the earlier section sounded harsh (4:6–13), v.14 explains that the intended effect is not social disgrace but moral and communal correction flowing from care and responsibility.

Question 2

In v.15, what is the difference between having “ten thousand tutors in Christ” and “not many fathers”?

Accepted Answer

Paul acknowledges the Corinthians can have many people who instruct or guide them “in Christ,” implying multiple voices can teach within the Christian sphere. But he says “not many fathers,” pointing to a rarer relationship: a founder who brought them the gospel initially and therefore has a unique stake in their formation. The verse itself grounds fatherhood in origin (“I became your father through the gospel”) rather than in superior brilliance. The contrast highlights that instruction can be multiplied, while formative spiritual parenthood is not easily replaced.

Question 3

How does the phrase “in Christ Jesus” function in v.15, given the claim “I became your father through the gospel”?

Accepted Answer

The text links Paul’s fatherly claim to Christ, not to Paul as an independent source. “In Christ Jesus” sets the sphere in which this fatherhood makes sense: Paul’s role is mediated through his proclamation of the gospel, not through biological descent or personal ownership. The explicit wording (“through the gospel”) clarifies the mechanism: they came to faith by receiving the message Paul preached. Interpreting the phrase this way keeps Paul’s relational authority tied to Christ and the gospel rather than to mere personal status.

Question 4

What does “be imitators of me” (v.16) most naturally refer to in the flow of 1 Corinthians 4?

Accepted Answer

In the immediate flow, Paul has just contrasted Corinthian self-confidence with apostolic lowliness and hardship (4:6–13). Then he explains his fatherly purpose and appeals for imitation. So “imitators of me” most naturally means copying Paul’s “ways in Christ” (v.17): his pattern of life, values, and posture as an apostle shaped by Christ. It is broader than copying a teaching style; it includes a way of living that resists status-seeking and aligns with the gospel-centered pattern Paul presents across the letter.

Question 5

Why does Paul send Timothy (v.17), and what is Timothy supposed to do in Corinth?

Accepted Answer

Paul says, “Because of this I have sent Timothy,” tying Timothy’s mission to the call for imitation and to Paul’s fatherly concern. Timothy is not sent to innovate or replace Paul, but to “remind” them of Paul’s “ways which are in Christ.” The purpose is memory and alignment: reconnecting the Corinthians with the pattern Paul taught them and continues to teach elsewhere. The description of Timothy as “beloved and faithful child in the Lord” also signals trustworthiness and shared tone and character with Paul.

Question 6

What does the phrase “my ways which are in Christ” (v.17) suggest about the relationship between belief and practice?

Accepted Answer

The phrase assumes that life “in Christ” includes a recognizable pattern—habits, decisions, and communal posture—that can be remembered and taught. Paul does not separate the gospel message from the way of life it produces. “My ways” are not presented as private preferences; they are “in Christ,” implying they are shaped by and consistent with the gospel Paul proclaimed. While the text does not list specific behaviors here, it frames Christian instruction as including embodied practices that reflect allegiance to Christ.

Question 7

What is the significance of “even as I teach everywhere in every assembly” (v.17) for understanding Paul’s claim?

Accepted Answer

This phrase indicates Paul sees continuity between what he expects in Corinth and what he teaches in other churches. At minimum, it supports the idea that Paul is not giving Corinth a special, one-off set of demands; his instruction is consistent. It also suggests Paul believes churches share a common apostolic framework—“ways in Christ” that can be taught across different locations. How extensive that uniformity is can be debated, but the text clearly presents Paul’s pattern as transferable and widely taught rather than locally improvised.
