Literary Context
These verses sit inside a larger section where Paul addresses a specific scandal in the Corinthian community and rebukes them for not responding appropriately (5:1–2). After insisting the situation cannot be treated lightly, Paul moves from critique to directive: he states his own settled conclusion (v. 3), then lays out the church’s gathered procedure and the authority under which it happens (v. 4), and finally gives the intended action and stated purpose (v. 5). Historical Context
Corinth was a prominent Roman city with diverse social networks, status competition, and public expectations around honor and shame. Small house-based groups had to decide how to handle behaviors that threatened their identity and cohesion, especially when members brought habits from wider urban life into the community. Paul writes from a distance, but he still exercises ongoing leadership through letters and expects the group to act together rather than leaving discipline to private individuals. The language assumes a real meeting of the congregation and a shared sense of who belongs “inside” versus “outside” the community.
Theological Significance
Paul treats the reported wrongdoing as serious enough to require an official, public response. Even though he is not physically present, he says he is “present in spirit” and has already reached a verdict about “the man who did this thing” (explicit in v.3).

Some disagreement centers on what “present in spirit” and “my spirit” mean (vv.3–4). One view is that Paul means moral and representative involvement: his settled judgment is to be treated as present through his letter and authority. Another view is that Paul describes a more direct spiritual participation in the assembly’s act, beyond mere representation.
Another major difference is what “deliver…to Satan” refers to in concrete terms (v.5). Many understand it as removing the person from the church’s protective fellowship—placing them back into the realm outside the community, which Paul can describe as Satan’s domain. Others think Paul implies an additional, extraordinary act in which the person is exposed to severe affliction.
A further difference concerns “destruction of the flesh” (v.5). Some take “flesh” as the physical body (possibly implying illness or death). Others take “flesh” as the person’s sinful drive or way of life—so the “destruction” is a breaking of the pattern of sin rather than bodily harm.
Why the disagreement exists Paul uses compressed, high-stakes phrases without spelling out the mechanics (“present in spirit,” “deliver to Satan,” “destruction of the flesh”). Because he also insists the action is taken “with the power of…Jesus,” readers differ on how much is ordinary community exclusion and how much is an exceptional, power-charged act. The text gives clear goals but leaves the practical details largely implicit.
What this passage clearly contributes These verses present a model of church discipline as (1) a corporate decision enacted in assembly, (2) carried out under Jesus’ authority rather than personal retaliation, and (3) aimed at an outcome that includes both serious consequence (“destruction of the flesh”) and an ultimate horizon (“saved in the day of the Lord Jesus”).
