He immediately qualifies the earlier sentence: he was not talking about all the sexually immoral people “of this world,” meaning those in wider society. He adds other categories alongside them—greedy people, those who take advantage of others, and idolaters—showing the issue was never meant to be a blanket avoidance of outsiders.
Unit 3 (v. 10b): The practical reason for the limitation
Paul gives a simple consequence: if they tried to avoid every such person outside the church, they would have to leave ordinary society altogether. The logic is that total separation is impossible if they are to live normal lives in their city.
