Question 1

What reasons does Paul give in verses 1–2 for why the Corinthians should recognize him as an apostle?

Accepted Answer

Paul points to two kinds of evidence. First, he appeals to a personal credential: he has “seen Jesus Christ, our Lord” (v.1). Whatever else “seen” implies, Paul treats it as a decisive part of his apostolic standing. Second, he appeals to the Corinthians’ lived reality: they are his “work in the Lord” (v.1). He presses this further by calling them the “seal” of his apostleship (v.2)—a confirming mark that his ministry among them was genuine. Even if others question him, their existence as a church is presented as proof that his work carries the Lord’s approval.

Question 2

In verses 3–4, who is Paul responding to, and what specific “right” does he name first?

Accepted Answer

Paul frames his comments as a formal reply: “My defense to those who examine me is this” (v.3). The wording suggests some people were scrutinizing or evaluating him, likely with doubts about his status or motives. The first concrete right he names is basic material support: “Have we no right to eat and to drink?” (v.4). That is, he argues that someone doing apostolic work should normally be supplied with necessities like food and drink. The question form assumes the answer is obvious: yes, this is a legitimate right connected to the work.

Question 3

What additional rights does Paul list in verses 5–6, and how does he strengthen the claim by comparing himself to others?

Accepted Answer

Paul adds two more rights. One is the right to “take along a wife who is a believer” (v.5), implying that ministry travel and support could include a believing spouse (or possibly a believing woman coworker; the main idea is that this companion would be part of the supported mission). The other is the right “not [to] work” (v.6), meaning not having to take other employment in order to keep doing ministry. He strengthens the argument by appealing to precedent: other apostles, the Lord’s brothers, and Cephas are treated this way (v.5). He asks why he and Barnabas would be exceptions (v.6).

Question 4

Why does Paul mention Barnabas specifically in verse 6? What does that detail do in the argument?

Accepted Answer

The text does not explain why Barnabas is singled out, but it functions rhetorically. By pairing himself with Barnabas, Paul shows the issue is not merely personal preference or an individual quirk; it concerns recognized workers more broadly. Barnabas was known as a significant coworker in early mission work, so naming him adds weight: if anyone thinks Paul’s situation is unusual or self-inflicted, Barnabas is a second test case. The question—“Or have only Barnabas and I no right…?”—is meant to sound implausible. It pushes the audience toward the conclusion that the same rights apply to them as to other ministry workers.

Question 5

How do the three job analogies in verse 7 support Paul’s main point?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 offers everyday comparisons to make Paul’s claim feel self-evident. Soldiers are not expected to fund their own service; their work entitles them to provision. People who plant and tend a vineyard normally eat some of the fruit connected to that labor. Shepherds caring for a flock normally share in its products, like milk. In each example, the worker participates in the material benefits tied to the work. Paul uses this common-sense pattern to reinforce his earlier statements about rights to food and drink and to support more generally. The analogies do not prove apostleship; they support the fairness of material support for recognized labor.

Question 6

What does Paul mean by calling the Corinthians “my work in the Lord” and “the seal of my apostleship in the Lord” (vv.1–2)?

Accepted Answer

“My work in the Lord” indicates that Paul sees the Corinthian community as the result of his labor, but not as a personal possession; it is work done under the Lord’s authority and for the Lord’s purposes. Calling them the “seal” of his apostleship adds the idea of confirmation. A seal marks something as authentic or validated, and Paul treats their existence and faith as that validating mark. The repeated phrase “in the Lord” keeps the focus on the Lord as the source and standard: Paul’s role matters because it is connected to the Lord’s work, not merely to Paul’s reputation.

Question 7

Across verses 1–7, what is the relationship between Paul’s apostolic identity and the rights he claims?

Accepted Answer

Paul links identity and rights in a layered way. He first argues that he truly is an apostle (vv.1–2), then he argues that apostles normally possess certain rights (vv.4–6), and then he supports that general principle with analogies from ordinary labor (v.7). The rights are presented as reasonable material entitlements that go with real work, not as luxury. At the same time, Paul’s repeated rhetorical questions show he is not begging for favors but asserting that the Corinthians’ skepticism is out of step with how work and support typically function. The passage sets up the idea that recognized ministry labor can rightly receive material backing.
