Question 1

In verses 7–8, what reasons does the writer give for calling the command both “old” and “new”?

Accepted Answer

He calls it “old” because the readers already had it “from the beginning,” and he restates that it is the word they heard from the beginning (v. 7). The command is not presented as a new invention or a revision. Yet he can also call it “new” because it is “true in him and in you” in the present situation (v. 8). The passage grounds this newness in a changed moral moment: “darkness is passing away” and “the true light already shines.” So the same message is both longstanding and newly pressing because of what is now taking place.

Question 2

What does the passage present as the practical test of someone’s claim to be “in the light”?

Accepted Answer

The explicit test is how a person relates to a “brother” (vv. 9–10). The writer sets up a contrast between what someone “says” (a claim to be in the light) and what someone does or is (hating a brother). If the person hates a brother, the writer says that person is in darkness “even until now” (v. 9). If the person loves a brother, the writer describes that person as “remaining in the light,” with a resulting stability (v. 10). The test is relational and observable rather than private.

Question 3

How does verse 8 connect the command to a broader view of history or the present moment?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 ties the command’s “newness” to an ongoing transition: darkness is already “passing away,” and the “true light” is already shining. The text speaks as if the change has begun, not as if it is only future. That makes the command more than a timeless rule; it fits the reality the community is now living in. The language suggests a moral environment reshaped by “true light,” where behaviors aligned with light (like love) match what is becoming true, while hatred belongs to what is fading (darkness).

Question 4

What is the difference between being “in darkness” (v. 9) and “walking in darkness” (v. 11) in this passage?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 describes a person who claims light while hating a brother as being “in the darkness even until now,” emphasizing their actual condition despite their claim. Verse 11 intensifies that picture: the hater is not only in darkness but “walks in the darkness,” describing an ongoing pattern or direction of life. The result is also described: the person “doesn’t know where he is going,” because darkness has “blinded his eyes.” So the passage moves from a contradicted claim (v. 9) to a sustained course and its consequences (v. 11): disorientation and impaired moral sight.

Question 5

In verse 10, what does “no occasion for stumbling in him” most naturally mean in context?

Accepted Answer

In context, the phrase follows the statement that the one who loves a brother “remains in the light” (v. 10). The most natural sense is that love produces steadiness rather than a situation that leads to falling. The wording can be heard in two closely related ways: (1) internally, love means there is not a trap or moral tripwire within the person that causes collapse; or (2) relationally, love avoids creating a stumbling situation in the community. Either way, the contrast with hatred in vv. 9 and 11 suggests the author is describing how love aligns with light and therefore avoids the confusion and harm that darkness brings.

Question 6

What does the passage claim is the effect of hatred on a person’s perception and direction?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents hatred as producing darkness-like blindness (v. 11). The person who hates a brother is said to be “in the darkness” and to “walk in the darkness,” suggesting a continuing mode of life. The effect is directional: the person “doesn’t know where he is going.” The reason given is perceptual: “the darkness has blinded his eyes.” So hatred is not treated as a single isolated failure but as something that damages moral clarity and guidance, leading to confusion about one’s path.

Question 7

What does verse 8 mean by saying the new command is “true in him and in you,” based on the flow of thought?

Accepted Answer

The verse links “true in him and in you” to the claim that darkness is fading and true light is shining (v. 8). At minimum, it means the command’s reality is not only spoken but embodied: it is true in “him” (a central figure the letter assumes) and also becoming true in the community addressed (“you”). The writer treats the command as matching the present light-reality, so its truth is visible in lived relationships. Even without settling exactly who “him” refers to, the flow suggests shared participation: what is true in the defining source is also meant to be concretely true among the readers.
