Question 1

In v.19, what does “by this” most naturally point back to, and why?

Accepted Answer

“By this” most naturally points back to the immediately preceding idea in 3:18: loving “in deed and truth.” The flow is: concrete love provides a way to “know that we are of the truth,” and that knowledge then “persuades” or settles the heart “before him” (before God). Stage A notes this as the anchor logic of the paragraph: visible love is not merely optional behavior but functions as evidence that supports assurance. The close proximity and the repeated focus on lived love make the backward reference more likely than a vague reference to everything previously taught.

Question 2

How does v.20 describe the relationship between the condemning heart and God’s knowledge?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 sets up a contrast: the heart can “condemn,” but God is “greater than our heart” and “knows all things.” The verse does not deny that the heart’s accusation might sometimes be correct; it says the heart is not the highest judge. God’s knowledge is larger and more accurate—covering motives, circumstances, and realities the person may not see clearly. In the paragraph’s argument, this provides a stabilizing ground for assurance when inner feelings or self-assessment turn harsh or unstable.

Question 3

What change occurs in vv.21–22 when the heart is “not condemning,” and what is the result?

Accepted Answer

When the heart is not condemning (v.21), the believer has “boldness toward God,” meaning confident access rather than shrinking back. Verse 22 then describes the outcome in prayer: “whatever we ask, we receive from him,” and it gives a stated reason—“because we keep his commandments and do what is pleasing in his sight.” The text explicitly links confidence in approaching God, prayer that is answered, and a life aligned with God’s commands. It does not present prayer as detached from a lived relationship shaped by obedience and desire to please God.

Question 4

In v.22, what does the word “because” contribute to the author’s logic?

Accepted Answer

“Because” makes the author’s reasoning explicit: receiving in prayer is connected to keeping God’s commandments and doing what pleases him. The verse presents this as an explanation, not merely as a separate topic. The author is not only stating that believers pray and sometimes receive; he is claiming a relationship between answered requests and a pattern of life oriented toward God’s will. Stage A flags this as a pressure point: whether “whatever we ask” is absolute or assumes aligned requests, but either way the verse’s own logic ties reception to obedience and pleasing God.

Question 5

How does v.23 summarize God’s commandment, and how are the two parts related?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 compresses God’s command into two coordinated commitments: believing in the name of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, and loving one another. The sentence frames both together as “his commandment,” not as unrelated options. In context, love is the outward expression that has already been emphasized (3:18–19), while belief in Jesus anchors identity and allegiance to God’s Son. The summary suggests that Christian community life is meant to be shaped by both right relationship to Jesus and practical love toward fellow believers.

Question 6

According to v.24, what does “abiding” involve, and what is the stated sign of it?

Accepted Answer

Abiding is described as mutual remaining: the one who keeps God’s commandments “remains in him,” and God “in him.” This portrays an ongoing, relational reality rather than a momentary experience. The verse then states how this is recognized: “By this we know that he remains in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.” So the sign named in the text is the Spirit given by God. In the larger flow noted in Stage A, this prepares for the next section’s focus on recognizing God’s Spirit and discerning what is truly from God (4:1–6).
