Question 1

In verses 7–8, what reasons does the writer give for loving one another, and how are those reasons connected?

Accepted Answer

The writer gives multiple connected reasons. First, love’s source is God (“love is of God”), so love is not treated as a merely human achievement. Second, loving is described as evidence of origin and relationship: “everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” Third, the negative is stated: the one who does not love does not know God. These claims are tied to a foundational statement about God’s character—“God is love”—so the logic moves from who God is, to what comes from God, to what that looks like in people who know him.

Question 2

What does the passage claim (explicitly) about the relationship between love and knowing God?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the passage links love and knowing God in both directions. Positively, it says that “everyone who loves” is “born of God” and “knows God.” Negatively, it says that the person who does not love does not know God. The connection is then grounded in God’s identity: “for God is love.” The writer is not presenting love as optional or peripheral to knowing God; he uses love as a test that makes claims about knowing God either credible (when love is present) or contradicted (when love is absent).

Question 3

What does “God is love” do in the argument of verses 7–8?

Accepted Answer

“God is love” functions as the deepest reason underneath the ethical test. The writer is not only saying that God commands love or approves of love, but that love expresses what God is like. That means love is not an arbitrary rule; it is connected to God’s nature. In the flow, verse 7 says love is from God and marks those who are born of God and know God. Verse 8 then reinforces the negative claim (no love → no knowledge of God) by appealing to God’s identity as love.

Question 4

According to verse 9, how was God’s love made visible, and what purpose is given for that action?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 says God’s love was “revealed in us” by a concrete event: God “has sent his only born Son into the world.” Love is therefore treated as something shown in history, not only felt internally. The verse also provides a purpose statement: God sent the Son “that we might live through him.” So God’s love is displayed in sending, and its intended outcome is life through the Son. The passage does not unpack the details of how life comes through him here, but it clearly ties God’s love to this sending and its life-giving aim.

Question 5

How does verse 10 define what “love” is in this context, and what contrast does it highlight?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 defines love by pointing first to God’s initiative: “not that we loved God, but that he loved us.” Love is framed as originating with God, not as a response to human affection or worthiness. The verse then specifies what that initiating love included: God “sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” In this context, love is not merely kindness or warm feeling; it includes decisive action that addresses sin and enables restored life. The contrast highlights priority—God’s love comes first and sets the meaning of love.

Question 6

What roles does the Son play in verses 9–10, and how are those roles connected?

Accepted Answer

The Son is described as the one God “sent… into the world,” and the sending has a stated goal: “that we might live through him” (v. 9). In verse 10, the Son’s mission is also described in relation to sin: he is sent “as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” These two roles are connected in the passage’s logic: life “through him” is not separated from dealing with sin. God’s love is displayed in both the life-giving purpose and the sin-addressing provision tied to the Son’s sending.

Question 7

What does the phrase “revealed in us” (v. 9) most naturally refer to within the passage’s own flow?

Accepted Answer

Within the flow, “revealed in us” points to how God’s love became visible to and among the writer’s community through the sending of the Son. The next clause explains the revelation: “that God has sent his only born Son into the world.” That makes the “revelation” something publicly shown in history rather than an undefined inner feeling. At the same time, the wording “in us” can naturally include the community’s experienced reality of that sending—how the event and its effects are known within the group.
