Question 1

In vv.18–20, what are the three “we know” statements, and how do they move from personal conduct to worldview to Christ-centered knowledge?

Accepted Answer

The passage gives three certainties. First, the person “born of God” is described as not sinning, and as guarded so the evil one cannot “touch” him (v.18). Second, the community knows it is “of God,” while “the whole world” lies in the evil one’s power (v.19). Third, they know the Son of God has come and given understanding so they can know and be “in” the true One, specifically “in his Son Jesus Christ” (v.20). The movement is from the individual’s changed life, to a two-sphere view of reality, to the Son’s coming as the basis for true knowledge and belonging.

Question 2

How does v.18 connect the ideas of new birth, sin, and protection from the evil one?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 ties these together in a single picture: being “born of God” and sin do not fit together, and the result includes protection. The text states that the person born of God “doesn’t sin,” then explains this with a second clause about being kept/guarded, so that the evil one does not “touch” him. Whatever “touch” means in detail, the verse links new birth with both moral change (sin is not the controlling reality) and spiritual security (the evil one’s reach is limited). The logic is not simply “try harder,” but “new birth comes with guarding that blocks the evil one’s decisive grip.”

Question 3

What contrast does v.19 draw between “we” and “the whole world,” and what does that contrast accomplish in the closing?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 draws a sharp boundary: “we are of God,” but “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” In the closing, this contrast accomplishes two things. It reassures the community about its source and belonging (“of God”), and it names the wider environment as spiritually compromised. That makes sense of why rival claims and pressures exist (the evil one has real influence in the world), while also clarifying that the community’s identity is not decided by the surrounding order. It functions as a summary boundary marker after earlier themes of testing claims and remaining loyal.

Question 4

According to v.20, what has the Son of God done, and what results does the text highlight?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 emphasizes the Son’s historical coming and its present effect: “the Son of God has come” and “has given us an understanding.” The immediate result is relational and cognitive: “that we know him who is true.” The verse then adds relational location language: “we are in him who is true,” and it specifies that this is “in his Son Jesus Christ.” The results highlighted are (1) true knowledge of God is not self-generated but given, (2) believers’ identity is described as being “in” the true One, and (3) this is inseparable from the Son, who is named explicitly.

Question 5

In v.20, what are the main options for what “This is the true God and eternal life” refers to, and what in the verse supports each option?

Accepted Answer

There are two main referents for “This is the true God and eternal life.” One option is that it refers to Jesus Christ, since he is the nearest explicit person named (“in his Son Jesus Christ”). That reading takes the final sentence as directly identifying Jesus with “the true God” and “eternal life.” The other option is that it refers to the Father, since the verse repeatedly stresses “him who is true,” and speaks of being “in him who is true,” with Jesus as the one through whom that relationship is defined. The wording can be read either way because both the Father and the Son are tightly linked in the sentence.

Question 6

How does the final warning about idols (v.21) fit with the themes of “true” and “knowing” in vv.20–21?

Accepted Answer

The warning in v.21 (“keep yourselves from idols”) follows immediately after v.20’s emphasis on “him who is true,” true knowledge, and being “in” the true One. That placement suggests idols are the concrete alternative to the “true” God known through the Son’s coming. Even after strong assurances (“we know…”), the ending implies competing loyalties remain a real danger. In the first-century setting, idols could be literal gods and civic cult practices, but the logic of the passage is broader: anything treated as a rival object of devotion and trust can undermine the community’s settled “knowledge” of the true One.
