Question 1

What details in verses 50–51 show Adonijah’s fear, and how does he try to manage the danger?

Accepted Answer

The text describes Adonijah as afraid “because of Solomon,” linking his fear to Solomon’s now-secured kingship. His response is physical and immediate: he goes to the altar and grabs its horns. He also tries to manage the danger through a specific request: he wants Solomon to swear first that he will not kill him “with the sword.” In the report to Solomon, Adonijah calls himself Solomon’s “servant,” using deferential language. Together, the action (altar-horns) and the speech (oath request, servant language) show a strategy of seeking protection and mercy in a public, sacred setting.

Question 2

How is Adonijah’s request framed when it is reported to Solomon in verse 51?

Accepted Answer

The report emphasizes both Adonijah’s fear and his proposed remedy. It states that Adonijah “fears King Solomon,” then immediately explains his posture: he has taken hold of the altar’s horns. The message includes Adonijah’s words, which center on an oath: Solomon should “swear to me first” not to kill him with the sword. The framing makes Adonijah’s fear the motive, the altar the setting, and the oath the condition he asks for before leaving. It also portrays Adonijah as lowering himself socially by calling himself Solomon’s servant.

Question 3

What exactly does Solomon promise in verse 52, and what are the stated limits of that promise?

Accepted Answer

Solomon’s response is explicitly conditional. He promises protection if Adonijah “shall show himself a worthy man,” using an emphatic image of safety: “not a hair of him shall fall to the earth.” But Solomon immediately places a limit on that safety: “if wickedness be found in him, he shall die.” The passage does not define “worthy” or “wickedness,” but it does define the structure of the promise—safety is offered, yet it can be revoked if wrongdoing is discovered. So the text presents mercy paired with warning rather than unconditional pardon.

Question 4

In verse 53, what actions show the shift from sanctuary posture to royal control?

Accepted Answer

The shift happens through Solomon’s initiative and officials. Solomon “sent” and men “brought him down from the altar,” meaning Adonijah is removed from the protective posture he chose and placed under the king’s direct authority. Adonijah then “came and did obeisance” to Solomon, a visible act of submission that reinforces the new hierarchy: Solomon is king; Adonijah is the one yielding. Finally, Solomon dismisses him: “Go to your house.” That closing instruction ends the immediate crisis without execution while still keeping Adonijah’s status defined by the king, not by the altar.

Question 5

What does the passage imply about the public importance of oaths and royal speech, based on Adonijah’s request and Solomon’s answer?

Accepted Answer

Adonijah’s request assumes that a sworn statement from the king would meaningfully secure his life: he asks Solomon to “swear” first not to kill him. That implies that royal speech—especially sworn speech—carries public weight and expectation. Solomon’s answer, however, is phrased as a conditional pledge rather than an explicit oath formula in the narration. The text therefore highlights a difference between what Adonijah wants (a clear sworn guarantee) and what Solomon gives (a measured, conditional assurance). The public character of both the altar setting and the reported words underscores that this is not private reassurance but a politically significant declaration.

Question 6

How do the repeated conditions (“if… but if…”) function within the story’s tension?

Accepted Answer

The “if… but if…” structure keeps the immediate danger from exploding while preserving the king’s leverage. On one side, Solomon’s “if he shall show himself a worthy man” opens a path for Adonijah to live, preventing instant execution and calming the succession crisis. On the other side, “but if wickedness be found in him, he shall die” keeps the threat active and warns that continued safety depends on Adonijah’s character and conduct. In narrative terms, the conditions resolve the altar standoff (Adonijah can leave alive) while planting suspense about whether Adonijah will later be judged as “worthy” or found “wicked.”
