Question 1

What does 1 Kings 11:40 say Solomon intended to do to Jeroboam, and what does Jeroboam do in response?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly states that Solomon “sought…to kill” Jeroboam, treating him as a threat severe enough to justify eliminating him. Jeroboam’s response is immediate and practical: he gets up, flees the country, and goes to Egypt. The verse also names his protector, Shishak, the king of Egypt, and it notes Jeroboam remains there until Solomon dies. In other words, the passage frames the conflict as political danger leading to exile, with Egypt functioning as a safe place to wait out Solomon’s reign.

Question 2

Why does the narrator mention Shishak by name, and what does that detail add to the story?

Accepted Answer

Naming Shishak anchors Jeroboam’s flight in a real geopolitical setting: Egypt is not just “abroad,” but a powerful neighboring kingdom with a specific ruler who can grant protection. This detail makes Jeroboam’s refuge sound official rather than accidental—he is not merely hiding, but being hosted by a foreign king. It also sets up later connections between Israel/Judah and Egypt in the broader narrative world of Kings. Within these verses, the main point is that Jeroboam’s survival is secured until Solomon’s death changes the political situation.

Question 3

What is the function of verse 41 (“the rest of the acts of Solomon…aren’t they written…”) within this closing section?

Accepted Answer

Verse 41 functions as a source pointer and a narrative signal that the present account is selective. Instead of trying to retell every achievement, failure, or episode from Solomon’s reign, the narrator directs attention to “the book of the acts of Solomon” as a fuller record of his deeds and wisdom. Explicitly, it claims other information existed in written form. Implicitly, it also transitions the reader away from Solomon’s long story and toward the next reign, using a conventional royal wrap-up rather than continuing details.

Question 4

In verse 42, what does it mean that Solomon reigned “in Jerusalem over all Israel,” especially given the tensions already mentioned in the chapter?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the line summarizes Solomon’s kingship as centered in Jerusalem and extending “over all Israel,” and it attaches a reign length of forty years. The phrase can be read as an official description of the united monarchy under Solomon’s rule. At the same time, the surrounding context in the chapter highlights rising opposition and internal strain, so the summary does not necessarily mean there were no fractures; it states the formal scope of his rule as the narrator presents it. The verse is more a reign notice than an analysis of unity.

Question 5

What details in verse 43 connect Solomon to David, and what details move the story forward?

Accepted Answer

The verse connects Solomon to David by using the traditional death phrase (“slept with his fathers”) and by stating Solomon was buried “in the city of David his father.” That burial location ties Solomon’s end to the dynastic center associated with David. The forward-moving element is the clear succession notice: “Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.” This is an explicit handoff that closes Solomon’s reign and prepares for the next narrative stage, where unresolved political pressures (including Jeroboam’s continued existence) can re-enter the story.

Question 6

How do verses 40–43, taken together, frame Solomon’s final years: as stability, transition, or crisis—and what in the text supports that?

Accepted Answer

The unit frames the end of Solomon’s reign as a transition under strain. The clearest sign of crisis is Solomon’s intent to kill Jeroboam, which is severe internal political action, and Jeroboam’s need to flee to a foreign king for safety. Yet the closing formula (other records, reign length, death/burial, succession) presents an orderly conclusion on the surface. Put together, the text suggests a kingdom that still has a functioning royal structure—Solomon reigns, dies, is buried, and his son succeeds—while significant threats are already positioned for after his death (Jeroboam waiting in Egypt).

Question 7

What information does the passage give—and not give—about the timing and nature of Jeroboam’s exile?

Accepted Answer

The passage gives a clear basic timeline: Jeroboam flees to Egypt during Solomon’s reign and remains there “until the death of Solomon.” It also provides one political detail: Jeroboam is with Shishak, Egypt’s king, implying protection. However, it does not specify how long the exile lasted in years, what communications (if any) existed between Jeroboam and Israel during that time, whether Solomon continued to pursue him, or what conditions Jeroboam lived under in Egypt. The text’s focus is the simple cause-and-effect: threat leads to flight; exile lasts until the king dies.
