Question 1

What sequence of actions does the passage attribute to Jeroboam in verses 31–33?

Accepted Answer

The passage stacks Jeroboam’s actions in a deliberate sequence. He first constructs “houses of high places,” indicating multiple worship locations. Next, he appoints priests from the general population, specifically excluding Levites. He then sets a national feast date (15th day of the 8th month), described as being like a feast in Judah. After establishing the calendar, he personally goes up to the altar at Bethel, offers sacrifices connected to the calves he made, installs the priests at Bethel, and finally burns incense during the feast. The repeated focus on “he made/ordained/went up” centers responsibility on the king.

Question 2

What does verse 31 say about who becomes a priest, and how is it framed?

Accepted Answer

Verse 31 says Jeroboam “made priests from among all the people,” and then clarifies that these priests were “not of the sons of Levi.” The framing is explicit: the author contrasts Jeroboam’s selection with the traditional Levite line. The point is not merely that Jeroboam added priests, but that he opened the priesthood beyond a recognized ancestry. In the flow of the passage, this staffing decision is part of building an alternate worship system alongside alternate sites. The text emphasizes the king’s agency in appointing them rather than an inherited or temple-based process.

Question 3

How does the passage connect Jeroboam’s feast to Judah’s worship calendar?

Accepted Answer

Verse 32 says Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day and describes it as “like the feast that is in Judah.” That statement connects his festival to Judah by resemblance, suggesting he is modeling the form or function of the celebration after something already practiced in the southern kingdom. At the same time, the passage highlights difference: the feast is dated in the eighth month, and it is carried out at Bethel, not Jerusalem. So the text creates a double association—continuity in outward pattern (“like”) and separation in location and scheduling.

Question 4

What details tie the worship at Bethel to the calves, and how direct is that connection in the text?

Accepted Answer

The connection is direct and explicit. Verse 32 states that Jeroboam went up to the altar at Bethel, “sacrificing to the calves that he had made.” The sentence does not merely place calves in the background; it links the sacrificial act to them as the objects involved in the worship. The passage repeats the emphasis on Jeroboam’s responsibility: the calves are “that he had made,” and the altar is “which he had made” (v. 33). These repeated attributions function as a narrative way of tying the worship system’s key elements—images and altar—to the king’s initiative.

Question 5

What role does Jeroboam personally play in the ritual actions described in verses 32–33?

Accepted Answer

Jeroboam is not portrayed as a distant organizer only. The passage twice says he “went up to the altar” at Bethel. In verse 32 he is associated with offering sacrifices there, and in verse 33 he goes up again “to burn incense.” In addition, he “placed in Bethel the priests” connected to the high places. Taken together, Jeroboam is presented as instituting worship structures (sites, priests, calendar) and also participating at the altar. The repeated depiction of his presence and actions makes the king a central actor in the worship life he is creating, not merely a political sponsor.

Question 6

What is emphasized by the repetition of “he had made” and the statement that the month was “devised of his own heart”?

Accepted Answer

The repeated “he had made” language (calves, altar, high places, priests) keeps pointing back to Jeroboam as the originator. It narratively concentrates accountability: these are not inherited institutions but constructed ones. The phrase about the month being “devised of his own heart” reinforces that point by describing the calendar choice as originating in his own planning rather than being presented as a received tradition in the passage. Even if one debates whether the phrase itself is strongly negative or mainly descriptive, it unmistakably underscores personal initiative. The author wants readers to see how thoroughly the worship system is Jeroboam-shaped in place, personnel, and time.
