Arrival and the oracle against the altar A “man of God” comes from Judah to Bethel because Yahweh’s word sends him. Jeroboam is standing at the altar, actively participating in the incense offering. The prophet shouts a message directed at the altar itself: Yahweh declares that a future son from David’s line, named Josiah, will use this altar as a place of execution for the “high place” priests and will burn human bones on it.
An immediate sign is announced The prophet provides a same-day sign to verify the spoken message. The sign is physical and public: the altar will split open and the ashes on it will spill out.
