Question 1

What details in vv. 1–2 establish the prophet’s authority, and what details establish Jeroboam’s authority?

Accepted Answer

The prophet’s authority is grounded in repeated language: he comes “by the word of Yahweh” and he speaks “by the word of Yahweh,” introducing his message with “Thus says Yahweh.” He is also labeled a “man of God,” a title that signals recognized prophetic status. Jeroboam’s authority is shown by setting and action: he is physically at the altar during a public incense offering, and later he gives orders that others are expected to carry out (“Lay hold on him”). The text deliberately places these authorities in direct collision at a national shrine.

Question 2

Why does the prophet speak to the altar (“altar, altar”) instead of addressing Jeroboam directly in vv. 2–3?

Accepted Answer

The passage depicts the altar as the central symbol and instrument of the contested worship system at Bethel. By addressing the altar, the oracle treats the physical site as the focal point of what is being judged, while still implicating the people and policies behind it. The content of the prophecy is also altar-centered: future acts will occur “on you,” and the sign concerns the altar tearing and its ashes spilling out. Jeroboam is not ignored—his reaction drives vv. 4–7—but the speech frames the issue as a matter of worship, not merely a personal dispute.

Question 3

How do vv. 3 and v. 5 show the function of the “sign,” and what does it verify?

Accepted Answer

In v. 3 the prophet announces a same-day sign: the altar will split and the ashes will spill. In v. 5 the narrator reports that it happens “according to the sign” and ties it directly to what was given “by the word of Yahweh.” This creates a verification loop: spoken word → predicted sign → observed fulfillment. The sign does not directly fulfill the long-range prediction about Josiah; instead, it verifies the credibility of the prophetic word in the present, so that the audience has a reason within the story to take the future-oriented oracle seriously.

Question 4

What is the narrative relationship between Jeroboam’s outstretched hand in v. 4 and the tearing of the altar in v. 5?

Accepted Answer

The two events happen together and reinforce each other. Jeroboam’s hand extends from the altar to order the prophet’s arrest, and the hand immediately withers so that he cannot draw it back. At the same time, the altar itself tears and the ashes spill out, matching the announced sign. Narratively, this links Jeroboam’s attempted control with divine interruption: the king’s command fails at the very moment the prophetic word is confirmed. The physical details—an immobilized royal hand and a broken altar—visually depict the collapse of royal leverage and cultic stability in that moment.

Question 5

What does Jeroboam’s request in v. 6 (“Yahweh your God”) suggest about his stance in the scene?

Accepted Answer

Jeroboam shifts from coercion to dependence. His wording acknowledges the prophet’s access to Yahweh (“your God”), which can imply distance or reluctance to identify with Yahweh as his own. Regardless of nuance, the request concedes that the prophet’s God is the only effective source of help for his withered hand. The narrative highlights this reversal: the king who tried to seize the prophet now asks the prophet to intercede. The restoration of his hand after prayer underscores that the outcome is controlled by Yahweh, not by royal command.

Question 6

How do judgment and mercy appear together in vv. 2–6, and how are they kept distinct?

Accepted Answer

Judgment appears in the oracle against the altar (future defilement and violence connected to the shrine) and in the immediate sign of the altar tearing. Judgment also touches Jeroboam personally when his hand withers as he orders the prophet seized. Mercy appears when Jeroboam asks for prayer and the prophet intercedes, resulting in the hand being restored. The text keeps them distinct by anchoring both to Yahweh’s initiative: the prophet does not “curse” on his own, nor does he heal by his own power. Both strike and restoration occur in response to Yahweh’s word and Yahweh’s response to entreaty.

Question 7

What role does v. 7 play after the sign and the healing, and what tensions does it introduce for the story?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 shows Jeroboam attempting to reframe the encounter from confrontation to hospitality and patronage: “Come home with me… and I will give you a reward.” Coming after an attempted arrest, it reads as a political move to regain control—either to honor the prophet, neutralize him, or align him with the court. The verse also sets up a tension the chapter will continue to explore: whether a prophet who speaks “by the word of Yahweh” can be drawn into royal networks of reward and obligation. Even without resolving it here, v. 7 reintroduces the king’s influence as a live pressure.
