Question 1

What does the narrator mean by “After this thing,” and what earlier material in the chapter is in view?

Accepted Answer

The phrase “After this thing” points backward to the events that immediately precede these verses: the confrontation over Jeroboam’s altar and the series of warnings and signs in the chapter. The text does not specify whether it means only the altar sign or the whole cluster of events, but it functions as a summary pivot: even after what just happened, Jeroboam does not “return” from his “evil way.” The main point is not the precise boundary of “this thing,” but Jeroboam’s unchanged direction despite intense prior warning.

Question 2

What action does the text highlight to show Jeroboam “didn’t return from his evil way”?

Accepted Answer

The passage does not describe a private attitude; it points to a public policy. Jeroboam “made again” priests of the high places. In other words, his unchanged “way” is seen in continuing and re-establishing the local-shrine system by staffing it. The narrator treats this repeated appointment of priests as a concrete marker that Jeroboam has not reversed course. The focus is on persistence: the same worship arrangement continues, and the king actively sustains it.

Question 3

What does it mean that Jeroboam appointed priests “from among all the people”?

Accepted Answer

The wording stresses breadth and lack of restriction. Priests for the high places are selected “from among all the people,” rather than from a limited group. The text’s emphasis is not on their competence or training but on their wide availability and the king’s control of the process. Read within Kings, that breadth functions as part of the narrator’s critique: Jeroboam is building an alternative worship network with its own personnel, and access to priestly roles is not bounded in the way the narrator expects.

Question 4

How does the phrase “whoever would, he consecrated him” describe the process and its gatekeeping?

Accepted Answer

The phrase presents willingness as the key condition: “whoever would” could be “consecrated,” and Jeroboam is the one doing it. That implies a low barrier to entry combined with strong royal sponsorship. The text does not explicitly say why people wanted the role, but it does say that desire plus the king’s action results in functioning priests at the high places. The point is institutional: Jeroboam can generate priestly staffing on demand, reinforcing the system.

Question 5

What is the “thing” that “became sin to the house of Jeroboam” in v. 34?

Accepted Answer

In immediate context, “this thing” refers to Jeroboam’s ongoing policy of making priests for the high places from among the people and consecrating whoever was willing (v. 33). Verse 34 interprets that policy as “sin” attached to his “house,” meaning it is not treated as a one-off misstep but as a defining pattern associated with his dynasty. The narrator links that pattern to the eventual downfall of Jeroboam’s household, making the policy a central reason in the story’s moral accounting.

Question 6

How should “even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the surface of the earth” be understood within the narrative?

Accepted Answer

The language gives the long-term outcome the narrator wants readers to associate with Jeroboam’s policy: his “house” will be removed. It functions as a forward-looking summary rather than a timestamped prediction, since the narrative continues beyond this moment. The focus is causal and evaluative: this policy “became sin” in a way that leads toward being “cut off.” The phrasing highlights totality (the end of the dynasty’s presence “from the land”) more than the exact timing.

Question 7

What relationship does the passage draw between leadership decisions and communal worship structures?

Accepted Answer

The text explicitly connects the king’s institutional choices to the moral status and future of his household. Jeroboam’s decision to staff high places broadly and to consecrate willing candidates is presented as a royal program, not a grassroots accident. Then the narrator states that “this thing” becomes “sin” for the house of Jeroboam, leading to its removal. The implied relationship is that worship structures are not neutral: when a ruler establishes and perpetuates them, that policy can define a dynasty’s legacy and trajectory.
