Question 1

What specific condition does Solomon place on Shimei, and how is the consequence framed?

Accepted Answer

Solomon orders Shimei to live in Jerusalem and not leave it (v. 36). The consequence is described with a concrete marker: the day Shimei goes out and crosses the Kidron, he should be certain he will die (v. 37). Solomon also frames responsibility in personal terms—Shimei’s “blood” will be on his own head—meaning the outcome will be treated as self-incurred because Shimei was warned in advance. The condition is not presented as vague; it is tied to a clear action and a declared penalty.

Question 2

How does Shimei respond to Solomon’s command, and what does the narrative emphasize about the agreement?

Accepted Answer

Shimei calls Solomon’s word “good” and promises to do what the king has said (v. 38). The narrative highlights that Shimei heard the terms, verbally approved them, and then lived in Jerusalem “many days,” signaling an extended period of compliance. Later, Solomon will quote Shimei’s earlier acceptance back to him (v. 42), so the agreement is treated as a remembered, confirmable commitment rather than a misunderstood instruction. The emphasis is on clarity, consent, and time passing before the violation.

Question 3

What event leads to Shimei leaving Jerusalem, and how is his journey described?

Accepted Answer

After three years, two of Shimei’s servants run away to Achish, king of Gath, and Shimei is informed that they are there (vv. 39–40). Shimei then saddles his donkey, goes to Gath to “seek” his servants, and brings them back (v. 40). The account is straightforward and does not mention Shimei requesting permission, weighing the oath, or attempting an alternative solution. The narrative focuses on the key fact relevant to Solomon’s condition: Shimei left Jerusalem and returned.

Question 4

How does Solomon restate the original warning, and what new emphasis appears in his restatement?

Accepted Answer

Solomon reminds Shimei that he had placed him under an oath “by Yahweh” and warned him that on the day he went out and walked about “anywhere” he would surely die (v. 42). This restatement echoes the earlier warning about leaving and dying, but it broadens the phrasing beyond the Kidron marker by adding “anywhere.” Solomon also repeats Shimei’s earlier approval (“The saying…is good”), reinforcing that Shimei accepted the terms knowingly. The emphasis shifts from a boundary line to the broader principle of prohibited travel.

Question 5

According to Solomon, what exactly did Shimei fail to keep, and how is the violation defined?

Accepted Answer

Solomon identifies two connected failures: Shimei did not keep “the oath of Yahweh” and he did not keep “the commandment” Solomon charged him with (v. 43). The violation is defined as leaving Jerusalem—specifically traveling from Jerusalem to Gath and coming back (v. 41), which directly contradicts the restriction. Solomon’s language treats the matter as more than breaking a house-arrest-like rule; it is oath-breaking under the divine name plus disobedience to royal authority. The core issue is not the servants but the broken sworn condition.

Question 6

How does Solomon connect Shimei’s past actions against David to the present sentence, and what claim does he make about Yahweh?

Accepted Answer

Solomon tells Shimei that he already knows the “wickedness” he did to David and that his own heart is aware of it (v. 44). On that basis Solomon declares that Yahweh will “return” Shimei’s wickedness onto Shimei’s own head. This ties the execution not only to the immediate travel violation but also to earlier wrongdoing from David’s time. The passage does not replay that earlier incident here; it assumes it as known and uses it to present the outcome as fitting retribution overseen by Yahweh.

Question 7

What outcomes does the narrative state after Shimei’s death, and how are they worded?

Accepted Answer

After Solomon orders Benaiah to carry out the execution and Shimei dies (v. 46), the narrative closes with the political summary: “The kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon” (v. 46). Just before this, Solomon also declares that he will be blessed and that David’s throne will be established “before Yahweh forever” (v. 45). Taken together, the stated outcomes are both dynastic stability and divine affirmation in Solomon’s speech, plus the narrator’s final confirmation that Solomon’s rule is now secure.
