Solomon sets a boundary and Shimei accepts Solomon summons Shimei and orders him to build a house in Jerusalem and stay there. The rule is simple: he must not leave the city. Solomon specifies the trigger point in concrete terms—if Shimei goes out and crosses the Kidron Valley, he should be certain he will die, and the responsibility for that outcome will be his own. Shimei responds that the command is “good,” agrees to obey, and remains in Jerusalem for many days.
The boundary is tested by a personal problem After three years, two of Shimei’s servants run away to Achish, king of Gath. When Shimei learns where they are, he acts: he saddles his donkey, travels to Gath, and brings the servants back. The text presents the journey plainly and does not describe Shimei seeking permission, only that he went and returned with the servants.
Solomon confronts Shimei with the prior warning Solomon is informed that Shimei left Jerusalem for Gath and has returned. How the boundary language works. Some read “crossing the Kidron” as the literal, measurable boundary line for the restriction. Others think Kidron functions as a concrete example that stands for leaving Jerusalem at all, especially since Solomon restates it as walking “anywhere” (v. 42).
How morally “excusable” Shimei’s trip might be. Some see Shimei’s journey to recover runaway servants as a reasonable necessity (v. 40) that makes Solomon’s sentence look harsh. Others see the narrative’s emphasis on oath-breaking as the main point: whatever the motive, Shimei knowingly chose to violate a sworn condition.
How Solomon’s appeal to Shimei’s past relates to this death sentence.
