Then Yahweh speaks to Elijah and gives Yahweh’s own assessment: Ahab “humbles himself before me” (explicit in v.29).
The main change Yahweh announces is about timing. Because Ahab humbled himself, the announced “evil” (calamity/disaster) will not be brought “in his days,” but will come “in his son’s days” and still be directed “on his house” (explicit in v.29). So the passage holds together two points at once: Ahab’s response matters, and the larger judgment on his dynasty is not canceled.
